Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation welcomes you to its second Annual Trail Run! The run will take place on Saturday, September 7th along the trails of Caroline Tuthill Preserve, an expanse of over 150 acres of oak and pitch pine forest, salt marsh, and open meadow located in Edgartown.

Beginning at the field along Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road, the trail run consists of a 3.2-mile loop through the pitch pine forest continuing on circuitous paths past salt marshes down to Sengekontacket Pond and back. The terrain begins in a field and includes a short section of paved bike path before entering the Preserve, where you will encounter a mix of sand and dirt paths before reaching a 160-foot raised boardwalk and ending back at the field.

Registration and additional information can be found by clicking the link in our bio.

* There is no cost to register for the event. Any contributions will support our work to conserve the natural, beautiful, rural landscape and character of Martha’s Vineyard for present and future generations.

✨ TREASURE ON THE TRAILS UPDATE ✨

Over half of the 65 floats have been found - but it could be more! If you haven’t registered your finds yet, please take a few seconds today to get those in 😊 We’d really appreciate it!

We have updated the status form as best as we can for now, but there are definitely treasures still waiting to be found! Today is a gorgeous day for a hike ☀️ Who knows? Maybe you’ll find your very own glass float along the way!

Next up for is Ox Pond Meadow in Edgartown! This rather subtle, but spectacularly beautiful property is located just steps away from Sheriff’s Meadow Sanctuary (SMS).

HISTORY: In 1976, Robert and Josephine Brown generously donated 3.7 acres of this land to SMF to preserve its beauty in perpetuity. In 1995, through the support of many generous donors, SMF was able to purchase the additional 1.3 acres abutting the property to create the sanctuary that we know today.

There is no parking for this property, but it is accessible from Orr Lane or Gaines Way, and is a short walk from Sheriff’s Meadow Sanctuary. A footpath winds through the meadow offering stunning views of land, sky, and sea.

✨ HIGHLIGHTS
- 5 acres of open meadow, shrub swamp, and pitch pine woodland
- Serene view of Nantucket Sound
- Perfect spot for birding
- Lots of milk w**d and butterfly w**d that attracts monarchs and other species
- Very close proximity to downtown Edgartown, SMS, Little Beach, Fuller Street Beach, and Edgartown Lighthouse
- Open year-round, from dawn to dusk

🗞️ UPDATES

📣 Announcement:

Please be advised that Phillips Preserve in Tisbury will be CLOSED to the public until further notice as of Thursday, March 14th.

As part of the approved forestry management plan, over the course of the next three weeks, the pitch pines marked for cutting in a 32-acre area, will be removed and turned into lumber to suppress the ongoing outbreak of the southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis).

The cutting treatment plan, going into effect immediately, is intended to contain the outbreak and prevent its spread before the warmth of spring sets in and the beetles emerge. This plan is also intended to reduce the risk of wildfire and to thin the surrounding forest so that mature trees have a chance at survival.

As a reminder, the entire property will be CLOSED for a period of at least three weeks. During that time, we ask that all hikers and neighbors refrain from using the trails or entering the preserve for any reason. Please use this time to explore the many other beautiful properties across the island that we have open to the public. We appreciate your patience and support at this time.

For more info, see the Articles section of the Trails MV app or contact Adam Moore ([email protected])

Bundle up, grab your family and friends, and hit the trails today in search of treasure as 2023 comes to a close! Just in time for winter break - the final wave of Treasure on the Trails: The Eben Horton Glass Float Project with MV Glassworks is back and happening NOW!

25 glass floats (wrapped in burlap to help protect them from the elements) have been tucked away across 18 of Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation’s conservation properties just waiting to be found again. As a little holiday surprise, there are several floats that have been tied with an icy blue ribbon; if you find one, stop by our office with it and receive a FULL SET of our Rez Williams’ poster series! ❄️

Be the first to locate the float, and it’s yours! To keep the hunt fair and to engage with as many explorers as we can, we ask that individual seekers and families only take one glass float per household.

Utilize the free mobile app📱 to learn more about our properties and to help navigate the trails 🗺️ If you find the treasure, follow the instructions, post a pic to your stories/profile, and TAG and on social media. Don’t forget to register your float on our website to be entered into a raffle for a free gift from MV Glassworks! 🤩

Conserving the natural,
beautiful, rural landscape
and character of Martha’s Vineyard.

Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation was officially incorporated on December 8, 1958. Henry Beetle Hough and Elizabeth Bowie Hough created Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation to conserve land that no other organization would. Henry was the Editor of the Vineyard Gazette, and he and his wife, Elizabeth, lived on Pierce Lane in Edgartown. From the north window of their living room, the Houghs gazed at a field known as the Sheriff’s Meadow and a small pond. In winters past, ice was cut from the frozen pond and stored in an icehouse. With the advent of electric refrigerators, the icehouse became irrelevant, and rumors swirled that Sheriff’s Meadow would be developed.

The Houghs decided to buy Sheriff’s Meadow and conserve it. Some years later, Mr. Hough recalled, “I had $7,500 from magazine rights from the Women’s Home Companion for a book. It was the only time I ever had $7,500 at one time, so we decided to preserve the ice pond and its surroundings.” Yet once the Houghs had purchased the land, they found that no conservation organization wanted to own Sheriff’s Meadow, as the property was small, and close to town, and lacked an endowment. Undaunted, the Houghs created a new organization, Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation, and gave the Sheriff’s Meadow to it.

Although Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation was incorporated in 1958, Henry considered 1959 to be the year of the organization’s founding. Since its founding, Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation grew through many gifts of land to become the local land trust for the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Today, Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation protects 2,900 acres of land. The Foundation owns 72 preserves totaling 2,075 acres, and holds 42 conservation restrictions over an additional 825 acres. Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation owns land in each town on the island.
