The 6 stages of change are heavily used my SUD professionals. They are a way for us to describe what stage a person in recovery may be in. The precontemplation stage is when someone is starting to become aware there is a need to change, the contemplation stage is when someone has started to create more positives to stop using then negatives, the preparation stage is when someone is starting create a plan for quitting substance use, the action stage is when someone has stopped using and is maintaining sobriety through a program while making lifestyle changes to maintain their sobriety, the Maintenance stage is the stage that will last a life time until they have relapsed, falling back into old habits and behaviors and start the 6 stages over again. Today marks 3 years since you left this earth, since we stopped hearing your laughter and your voice. Not a day goes by we don’t think about you my dearest son, brother, grandson, and nephew. It brings us peace to know that you are no longer experiencing the internal battle that you experienced through life, through your addiction. We love you Jonah forever and always.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than he**in and 100 times stronger than morphine. It is a major contributor to fatal and nontatal overdoses in California and the United States. In 2023 there was 12,799 fentanyl poisonings in California alone and over 112,000 poisonings in the United States making record numbers. Please educate yourself, your family, and your community on just how fatal using substances could be. Both Jonah and Travis tragically passed away from fentanyl poisonings don’t let fentanyl take your loved one from you.

A Look into Travis's Journey
Travis John Jacobson was born March 10, 1995 to parents Jerry and Carolyn Jacobson. He was an only child until Aaron Jacobson was adopted in 2004 at age 5.
Travis loved water polo, competitive swimming, skateboarding, wakeboarding, and snowboarding.
Travis has a presence that attracted other people when he arrived with his big smile, monster hugs and kind and genuine affection for his friends and family. He was also the glue who kept his group of friends together and would always initiate road trips to visit friends the farthest away from the group. Travis traveled extensively with his father, mother, and friends.
On August 13th, 2019 after Travis returned home from dinner with one of his roommates after which they both had taken a “Xanax” tablet, Travis’s roommate would wake up and go to work the next morning not knowing Travis had passed away from a Fentaynl poisoning at the young age of 24. Travis’s Autopsy toxicology results showed that there was 1). A small amount of Xanax which is what Travis believed he bought the previous night 2). A moderate amount of Ibuprofen added as a cheap filler and 3). A fatal amount of Fentanyl.
Neither his father nor mother were aware of his recreational drug use, until they got the awful call from the Los Angeles coroner at 3:00am. By far the worst day of their lives! His friends say he had bought what he thought was Xanax on the streets but everyone would later find out that wasn't the case.
“For the years and days we had the pleasure of him as a member of our family we couldn’t have been more pleased and proud to call him our son”. - Jerry Jacobson

A Look into Jonah's Journey
Jonah was welcomed into this world by his loving father, John, and devoted mother Maria, on October 2, 1999. Two years later in 2001, he became a proud older brother to his little sister Mallory.
Jonah loved fishing, video games, spending time with his family, and he adored his cat. Jonah also enjoyed listening to music, some of his favorite artists being Lil Pepe, 21 Savage, and Post Malone. Jonah loved playing water polo for Golden West High School and Sova where he excelled at the game.
Jonah’s family became aware of Jonah’s addiction in the summer of his Junior year of High School, shortly after he went into his first rehab. After graduating High School Jonah continued to struggle with his addiction. He started using co***ne, he**in, methamphetamines, and pills. Jonah had overdosed a total of four times, and his father revived him 3 out of the four times. Jonah went into a total of four rehabs, and one sober living home. He wanted to get better but his addiction consumed him and led him down the rabbit hole. Jonah battled with his addiction everyday.
Jonah was adored by his parents, sister, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Jonah was joyful, loving, and intelligent.
On May 14, 2021 Jonah lost his battle with addiction and we were all forced to say our final goodbyes. He took his final breath, passing away from a fentanyl poisoning at just 21 years old.

Make sure you are visible, you can easily attach reflective tape or glow sticks to costumes, shoes, candy bags, strollers, or wagons. 2). Use sidewalks when possible, when crossing the street use crosswalks and look both ways before crossing the road. 3). Don't trick or treat alone always stay in a group. 4). Inspect yours and or your child's candy, be on the look out for open or damaged packaging, homemade items, and potential allergens that could be unsafe.

Thank you to Sycamore Valley Academy for allowing us to tell our story of how addiction and fentanyl has affected our lives. Yesterday we spoke to the students about how Jonah’s addiction affected not only his life but the lives of those around him and how fentanyl is affecting our community. We explained to the students how fentanyl is made and how it’s entering our state as well as just how dangerous the drug can be outside of an controlled environment.
