The local Arrowhead Hotshots and two Wildland Fire Module (WFM) crews; The Inyo National Forest Mammoth WFM, and the Stanislaus National Forest Summit WFM are spiked out in the northeast section of the Coffee Pot Fire. Hotshots are trained to fight the most challenging fires, often in remote and unforgiving terrain like the area of the Coffee Pot Fire. Wildland Fire Modules are highly skilled and versatile fire crews of at least seven members that provide technical expertise to meet resource and management objectives.
Spiking out is a tactic where crews camp near the fire rather than returning to base camp daily. This ensures a reduced response time, enabling fire suppression efforts without delay. Spiking out is physically demanding, usually in very remote areas, and requires careful planning to ensure the safety and well-being of the crew members.

Daily Update 09-06-2024

Fire Size: 13,041 acres
Percent Contained: 25%
Primary Strategic Control Line: 94%
Personnel: 1,341

CURRENT SITUATION: Yesterday morning, crews patrolled the Northeast area as a low-intensity fire backed down from Eden Creek Grove, but as the inversion lifted in the early afternoon, fire activity increased. Terrain-driven winds caused the fire to cross Eden Creek, but these fires remained within planned control lines. Firefighters were inserted to strengthen and improve handlines. To the South, firefighters worked to strengthen containment lines along South Fork Drive. Crews mopped up fire that extended beyond the direct control lines east of Scratch Creek. Along the north flank, crews mopped up where fire crossed the river near Lookout Point. Retardant was used to lower the risk of the fire moving beyond direct control lines.

Today, firefighters will work to improve control lines where the fire crossed Eden Creek. Air operations will continue to enhance suppression efforts. As the fire's western side becomes controlled, firefighters will pivot their efforts towards the eastern flank to support operations. Crews will continue to backhaul water tanks, hoses, and equipment along the south flank and also continue road repair and removal of hazardous trees. Road improvements along Salt Creek Road are ongoing. Crews will mop-up the spot where fire crossed the East Fork Kaweah River near Lookout Point. Water tenders continue to use retardant along Mineral King Road to reduce the risk of the fire moving beyond this contingency control line.

Daily Update 09-05-2024

Fire Size: 12,915 acres
Percent Contained: 23%
Primary Strategic Control Line: 94%
Personnel: 1,522

CURRENT SITUATION: Yesterday, firefighters prioritized operations on the fire’s northern flank. Crews enhanced direct control lines along the East Fork Kaweah River while tactical water tenders applied retardant along Mineral King Road. Using tactical water tenders allow aviation support to concentrate on other areas. All spot fires along the northern flank were identified, contained, and extinguished. Moving east along the Kaweah River, firefighters patrolled the fire as it slowly backed down toward the river. In coordination with crews on the ground, drones conducted aerial ignition operations to produce low-intensity fire to moderate the effects around the giant sequoia groves near Eden Creek. Heavy equipment was used to continue road and trail repair to the south. Mop-up operations continued along the southern flank of the fire.
Today, crews will focus on reinforcing direct control lines in the north. Aircraft, in conjunction with crews on the ground, will slow the progression and intensity of the fire. In the south, crews will continue to improve control lines along South Fork Drive and Salt Creek Road. Firefighters will continue to mop-up and mitigate hazardous trees in contained fire areas. Unified Command: CAIIMT15 & CAL FIRE
Fire Size: 12,705 acres
Percent Contained: 25%
Primary Strategic Control Line: 94%
Personnel: 1,477
Cause: Lightning

CURRENT SITUATION: Yesterday, firefighters prioritized operations on the fire’s northern flank. Crews used strategic firing operations, direct control lines, water drops, and retardant to contain fire that had reached beyond the primary control line near Case Mountain Road. As fire backed into the East Fork Kaweah River yesterday, firefighters identified and suppressed spot fires that reached beyond the river’s primary control line. On the northeast flank, crews worked to hold fire within the direct control line toward Horse Creek, bolstering the line with fire retardant operations. To the south, firefighters monitored for residual heat within the fire’s perimeter near Scratch Creek, with mop-up and repair activities progressing along the South Fork Kaweah River containment line. Crews on the western flank patrolled for any spot fires and held the containment line being established there.

Today, crews will again focus efforts on the northern flank. Firefighters will continue fortifying the primary control line near Case Mountain Road. Crews will strengthen secondary indirect control lines constructed along Mineral King Road. Firefighters will use low intensity back burning with aerial ignition where fire has not yet reached the primary control line at the East Fork Kaweah River. Using aerial resources, crews will add retardant along the ridges north of East Fork Kaweah River to bolster containment efforts. On the northeast flank, firefighters will hold direct control lines southeast of the Eden Creek Grove of giant sequoias, and will continue constructing control lines toward Horse Creek....
