This month, we celebrate Disability Pride Month. The National Archives houses numerous records related to American citizens with disabilities, including personal letters and historic legislation. These records offer insight into past efforts to establish programs and protect the rights of people with disabilities.
In July 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law by President George H. W. Bush. This historic civil rights law protects the rights of people with disabilities. The law prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications and access to state and local government’ programs and services.
