HUH Celebrates World Hand Hygiene Day Sunday, May 5, 2024

This Sunday is Hand Hygiene Day at Howard University Hospital (HUH). Celebrated every year on May 5, Hand Hygiene Day mobilizes people around the world to increase adherence to hand hygiene in healthcare facilities, thus protecting healthcare workers and patients from infections. As part of the Clean Hands Count campaign, the goal is to maintain a global profile on the importance of hand hygiene in healthcare and to ‘bring people together’ in support of hand hygiene improvement.

• Research shows that washing hands with soap and water could reduce deaths from diarrheal disease by up to 50
• Researchers estimate that if everyone routinely washed their hands, 1 million deaths a year could be prevented.
• A large percentage of foodborne disease outbreaks are spread by contaminated hands. Handwashing can reduce the risk of foodborne illness and other infections.
• Handwashing can reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by 16–21%.

The scientific evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that appropriate hand hygiene is the single most effective action to stop the spread of infection in healthcare settings, while integrated with other critical measures. Together, we can accelerate action to prevent infections and antimicrobial resistance in healthcare, while building a culture of safety and quality in which hand hygiene improvement is given the highest priority.

In addition, hand hygiene protects you and those receiving the care you provide. The simple act of cleaning your hands can prevent the spread of germs, including those that are resistant to antibiotics. Some healthcare personnel may need to clean their hands as many as 100 times during a work shift. Keeping the skin on your hands healthy and clean is a challenge that requires all healthcare personnel to be knowledgeable about how to care for their hands and when hands should be cleaned.

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity to Perform at HUH

The musicians of the Zeta Iota Chapter (Howard University) of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America will bring a live performance to Howard University Hospital caregivers on Saturday, May 4, at 2:00 p.m., in the Hospital’s Cafeteria. The performance is part of an ongoing community outreach initiative to bring transformative music to organizations that contribute to the greater good of the public.

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is the world’s oldest and largest secret national fraternal society in music. Sinfonia was born on October 6, 1898, at the New England Conservatory in Boston, when a group of thirteen young men under the guidance of Ossian Everett Mills met “to consider the social life of the young men students of that institution [and] to devise ways and means by which it might be improved.”

Sinfonia became a national fraternity on October 6, 1900, with the admission of a group of men at the Broad Street Conservatory in Philadelphia. For over a century, Sinfonians in nearly every field of study and professional endeavor have transformed music in America. The opportunity of becoming a Sinfonian is offered to as many men as possible who, through a love for music, can assist in the fulfillment of the Fraternity’s Object and ideals either by adopting music as a profession or by working to advance the cause of music in America.

HUH Recognizes National Volunteer Month & Week

April was officially named National Volunteer Month by President George H.W. Bush in 1990 as part of his 1000 Points of Light campaign. April, as National Volunteer Month, recognizes all those who give freely of their time and energy.

National Volunteer Week is celebrated annually during April and will be observed this year from April 21 to 27. This week-long celebration places a spotlight on inspiring figures who are bettering our community and world in general through their invaluable seeds of kindness. This significant celebration which was established in 1974 provides the perfect opportunity to say thank you.

Here at Howard University Hospital, our community volunteers play an active role in supporting our staff and patients. We currently have a group of five (5) of our active volunteers who have a combined total of 90 years and over 96,000 hours of service; had COVID not intervened, they would have easily surpassed 100,000 hours of service. Since April 2023, our pool of volunteers have begun to return to service post-COVID; from that time to date, they have contributed over 10,000 hours of service.

HUH Acknowledges Administrative Professionals Day

April 24, is Administrative Professionals Day. Celebrated on Wednesday of the last full week of April, the day acknowledges the hard work and commitment of secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists, and other administrative support professionals in organizations across the globe. Administrative Professionals Day was created by Mary Barrett, president of the National Secretaries Association in the late 1940’s.

In 1952, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer declared the first Wednesday in June to be recognized as Secretaries Day. Three years later, Secretaries Day was then changed to the last week of April. In 1981, the day was changed from Secretaries Day to Administrative Professionals Day to incorporate not only secretaries but a myriad of professional and administrative assistants. Today, Administrative Professionals Day is celebrated all over the world.

Here at Howard University Hospital, we appreciate the commitment, hard work and dedication of our administrative professionals; and everything they provide to keep our organization a success.

BLACK MATERNAL HEALTH WEEK IS HERE!
APRIL 11-17, 2024

Black Maternal Health Week, April 11-17, 2024 is here. The week provides an opportunity to raise awareness and take action to improve the health of Black mothers across the nation. Did you know that Black women in America are dying at a higher rate from pregnancy-related causes than women in any other developed nation. Black women face even more risks and are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts. Factors that contribute to these disparities include variation in quality healthcare, underlying chronic conditions, structural racism and implicit bias.

The Howard University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has created a multitude of events (see attached flyer) to help end the maternal health crisis that is severely impacting far too many women and families.

Here are Black Maternal Health Facts:
- 90 percent of maternal deaths occur among non-Hispanic, Black women in Washington, D.C.
- The mortality rate for Black women is 69.9 deaths per 100,000 live births -2.6 times the rate for White women.
- 65 percent of maternal deaths occur to women who live east of the Anacostia river.
- 46% of black maternal deaths were considered potentially preventable.
