and present INTERLUDE, an exhibition featuring fifteen artists of the STABLE studios whose works are in conversation with the museum's permanent collection. The exhibition spans media, engaging theories of color composition and spirituality, and broadening definitions of cultural iconography, portraiture, landscape, and performance. 

INTERLUDE expresses the poetics of relation as these artists work with common aesthetic and conceptual interests, reflecting and responding to precious environments of modernity. These artists meet through their approaches and applications to mirror, respond to, and complement each other. This interlude is the moment in-between collective past and future and the present moment of the artist's practice.

Open Process: Tradewinds 1-3p
Extended Gallery Hours: 3-6p

In the Open Process interactive workshop, exhibiting collaborators Larry Cook () and Allie Martin () invite participants to learn more about their process. Larry will take photos of the participants and they will bedazzle their photos using crystals, similar to the process of the multimedia works in the exhibition. Allie invites participants to tell stories of their experience with Go-Go and city sounds, these voices will be projected onto the wall like Go-Go music that permeates and projections onto the city’s streets.

The Club Is The City Is The Club 🌆

We are excited to announce our next exhibition: Tradewinds. This exhibition is the culmination of the Nexus Residency wherein photographer Larry Cook () and ethnomusicologist Allie Martin () worked in tandem to meld their practices, presenting a unified body of new works.

Tradewinds approaches DC’s Go-Go music club culture from dual angles of photography and soundscape, mirroring and expanding the essential light and sound of club aesthetics as a mode of community archival practice.

COMING SOON: PeerSpace 💻

Are you a screen-based creator? The new co-working space at STABLE, PeerSpace, is for you! PeerSpace is an environment for community, conversation, and creativity. This Fall, we look to welcome a cohort of 10 members comprised of graphic designers, art advisors, freelance arts administrators, writers, and all other members of the arts ecosystem who do not require private studio space nor have a visual art practice. We aim to connect artists to the arts administration, business, and academic community.

Applications open August 1, and selected members shall be notified in late August.

Meet the Nexus Resident: Larry Cook 📸

“My residency will consist of making new work and a site-specific installation that engages with club photography and go-go aesthetics.”

Larry Cook (b.1986, Silver Spring, MD) is a conceptual artist working across photography, video, and installation. Based in Washington, DC, Cook received his MFA from George Washington University and his BA in Photography from SUNY Plattsburgh. Cook has exhibited his work nationally at the Kemper Art Museum, MoMA PS1, the National Portrait Gallery, and internationally at Schiefe Zähne in Germany and the 2022 Venice Biennial Art in Venice, Italy.

His work is in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Harvard Art Museums, Baltimore Museum of Art, and other institutions. Cook has held artists-in-residences at Light Work and The Nicholson Project, among others. He was recently commissioned by the Mississippi Museum of Art and the Baltimore Museum of Art for the exhibition, A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration. Cook is currently an Assistant Professor of Photography at Howard University.

The STABLE artists have shared an 11” x 14” sketchbook, producing new, original works on paper. This invitation encouraged an exploration of new mediums and scale for the majority of the group. These works express an aptitude for effort; for exploration of both emblematic and emerging facets of individual practice.

These works support the development of WKSP [workshop.] WKSP is our space for artist-led classes, intimate discussions, and ultimately a resource-sharing mechanism in the D.C. arts community.

During the summer months, the collaborators share our gallery space as a studio space to produce a new body of work, prioritizing new, larger scales and materials. The Nexus Residency seeks to avail new modes of making and thinking about one’s practice, and its involvement with the public.

Join us in welcoming the inaugural residents, photographer Larry Cook () and ethnomusicologist Allie Martin who will collaborate on an installation with their interest in club aesthetics and local community based archival practices as a connective thread.

STABLE welcomes to our studios! Coming to us from Dublin, Ireland by way of Norman Houston Project of which STABLE sat as a juror for the travel residency. More below and to come! 💥

The Norman Houston Project is a new project initiated by Solas Nua in Washington D.C., dedicated to the memory of Norman Houston, the former Director of the Northern Ireland Bureau (NIB), in the United States.  The project includes the Norman Houston Short Film Award, presented to the best short film form Northern Ireland at Solas Nua’s annual Capital Irish Film Festival and the Norman Houston Multi-disciplinary Commissioning Award.

Niamh McCann is a Dublin based visual artist. Her work is a considered, individual voice in contemporary Irish art; effortlessly correlating strands of three-dimensional work, painting/drawing and installation.

Exhibiting Practice | Works on Paper

Over the last few weeks, the artists at STABLe have shared an 11”x 14” sketchbook, producing new works on paper. This invitation encouraged an exploration of new mediums and scale for the majority of the group.

What is Lithograph??
Come to the free workshop hosted by STABLE artist Gail Shaw-Clemons who will introduce you to the process of Lithography, albeit a modern version of an antique technique.

Come draw on a pronto plate, which is a frosted film made for this technique. The process will foster the understanding of water repelling oil and oil repelling water.

This workshop starts at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 4th & is FREE but requires an RSVP : )
