Raya Bodnarchuk started sculpting animals from clay at the age of two. Rather than drawing from real animals, she uses each of her creations as inspiration for the next. Her sculptures are based on shapes she observes in the world around her. She simplifies these forms to their most essential elements. For example, she reduces the bushy tail of a fox to a clean, half-moon shape, creating a sculpture that appears almost abstract. These sculptures were created using lost-foam casting, which highlights the raw, natural qualities of the materials (and ensures that they all look great together!).

Arab American artist, Helen Zughaib, explores the complex and universal problems of war, violence, and displacement in her exhibition “Borders and Barriers: Patterns of Resilience” at IA&A at Hillyer.
Beginning with the Arab Spring in 2010, Zughaib documented the ongoing instability in the Middle East from revolutions and uprisings focusing on the migrant crisis.
In this exhibition, Zughaib expands her attention to include global border issues and contemporary wars, highlighting the universal issues surrounding war and displacement.
Using bold colors and patterns Zughaib reflects the dignity and heritage of the displaced people. She invites viewers to focus on details or something small (like children’s shoes) to understand the larger problems of contemporary wars.
Don’t miss the opportunity to miss this thought-provoking exhibition, “Borders and Barriers: Patterns of Resilience” which closes this weekend on Sunday, June 30th!

RAYA BODNARCHUK: DO SOMETHING YOU LOVE EVERY DAY
Opening Thursday, June 13th, 2024 | 5-7 PM
On view through July 27th, 2024
Raya Bodnarchuk, originally trained as a sculptor, expanded her artistic repertoire in the 1980s to include drawing and mixed media. For Raya, having a daily artistic ritual of creating a painting a day became a joyful way of maintaining creativity and consistency. Between 2013 and 2019, Raya’s daily practice evolved from simple ink drawings into 1,926 detailed gouache paintings. She focused on a new subject each day—a solitary mango, a blossoming flower, a self-portrait, the sunrise, architecture or the changing seasons—recording what she saw in her own way.
Although known primarily for her sculptures, collages and screen prints, Raya’s interest in painting a small work daily derived from advice she gave to her art students to “do something you love every day.” In addition to displaying two hundred paintings, "Do Something you Love Every Day" will also include a selected group of Raya’s figural sculptures.
