"NLC Alumni are everywhere, advancing progress in every industry and issue-area across the country..." - Candace Stanciel, NLC Atlanta 2013
We are reflecting on Candace's letter from the 2023 NLC Annual Report and are grateful for her leadership within and outside of NLC.
At the 2024 NLC Convention, Candace announced she would be stepping down from the NLC National Board at this time. During her announcement, Candace shared her vision and admiration for NLCers all across the country. Her inspiring words resonated with our convention attendees and we look forward to her next phase as a !
Thank you again Candace!
Don't worry, before we send you out on the big stage to change the world, we'll make sure to train you first.
If you want to pick up some moves to help you on your leadership journey, then the 2025 New Leaders Council Institute is for you.
While we can't guarantee that learning how to dance is part of the curriculum (well, maybe if you attend Convention), we can ensure that you won't freeze during fundraising, that you'll learn how to break it down with smooth communication skills, and successfully spin your way into organizing and moving people.
We'll train you how to lead with authenticity and not borrow anyone else's style.

🌟 National Lazy Day? Let's Reframe That. 🌟
Today isn't about laziness—it's about reclaiming our right to rest. In a world that values productivity above all else, taking time to rest is a radical act of resistance. As Tricia Hersey, founder of The Nap Ministry, reminds us:
"Rest is a form of resistance because it disrupts and pushes back against capitalism and white supremacy."
At New Leaders Council, we believe in nurturing not just our communities, but ourselves. So today, let’s honor the power of rest. Rest is restorative, revolutionary, and essential for creating lasting change. Take a moment to recharge—you deserve it. 💤
ID: Rest is Resistance: Why Rest Matters for Changemakers
- 75% of people experience burnout at work.
- Only 35% of Americans get the recommended 7+ hours of sleep.
- 30% of volunteers experience burnout due to overcommitment and lack of balance between volunteering and personal life.
- 50% of volunteers are more likely to continue volunteering long-term when they take regular breaks and prioritize self-care.
- 85% of leaders who regularly practice self-care and prioritize rest report higher levels of personal and professional satisfaction.
“Rest is a form of resistance because it disrupts and pushes back against capitalism and white supremacy.” - Tricia Hersey, founder of The Nap Ministry
Actionable Ways to Rest: Unplug from devices, create a cozy space, take intentional naps, engage in quiet reflection, practice gentle movement.
REST, SO YOU CAN LEAD YOUR LEGACY. 🌟

The 2024 New Leaders Council Convention was featured in the Associated Press in the article titled, "Civil Rights Movement Freedom Riders urge younger activists to get out the vote."
"Charles Person, one of the Civil Rights Movement’s original Freedom Riders, echoed organizers across Georgia when he urged a group of Generation Z and millenial (sic) activists to encourage young people to vote.
Young leaders from across the country gathered in Atlanta at a conference organized by the New Leaders Council, a nonprofit that encourages civic engagement," the article says.
"Don’t give up,” Person said. “You have to believe in you. I believe in you because the future is in your hands.”

As we celebrated our theme, "A Transformative Legacy: Championing Community Leadership," we hope that you felt welcome, renewed, and inspired to create your living legacy in your communities and the world.
We're thinking back on this moment on The Legacy Tour at the Booker T. Washington High School, the first public high school for African- Americans in the state of Georgia, which was founded 100 years ago and is the alma mater of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We're standing by the statue of Washington, called "Booker T. Washington Lifting the Veil of Ignorance," which is the only exact replica of the original bronze at the Tuskegee Institute by sculptor Charles Keck. The inscription reads: "He lifted the veil of ignorance from his people and pointed the way to progress through education and industry."
Fittingly, we're joined in this photo by Mr. Charles Person, the youngest original Freedom Rider.
Tag yourself and who you see in the comments.
We look forward to building our legacy with you!
