June 1th - June 30th is LGBTQ+ Pride Month! All month long we will highlight the history of LGBTQ+ Pride Month and follow the movement in the U.S. and abroad!
Why is June Pride Month? The monthlong global celebration began with Gay Pride Week in late June 1970. At a time when LGBTQ+ people largely kept their identity or orientation quiet, the June 28, 1969, raid sparked a series of protests and catalyzed the movement for rights.

What a great time we had celebrating 50 years at GW earlier this month! We kicked off this celebration with Professors Clare Hemmings and Jennifer Nash who spoke about the rise of global right-wing attacks on what they call gender ideology and specifically anti-trans initiatives, and the range of feminist responses, and discussed the relationship between public writing and academic theory in two arenas, respectively.
Past directors of the program also gathered to reflect on their time as Director of the WGSS program. The directors described WGSS as a home for impactful, relevant conversation and activism on topics from feminist theory to inequalities in policy and power structures.
We ended our celebration with an Alumni Lunch Reception that also featured an open mic for remarks about retiring facutly Professors Cindy Deitch and Dan Moshenberg. Alums and current students and faculty touchingly celebrated Professors Deitch's and Moshenberg's ability to inspire and guide them and their skills to build the institutional strengths of WGSS at GWU.
