Kroger, one of the nation’s leading grocery chains with over 2,700 stores under brands like Pay-less, Ralph’s, and City Market, is lagging behind Aldi, Target, and Whole Foods in addressing climate crisis-causing hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Green America and the Environmental Investigation Agency have been pressuring Kroger to switch to low-polluting natural refrigerants, supported by thousands of Green Americans and investors. In June 2024, Kroger announced that all its new stores will use CO2 refrigerants starting in 2025, which are much better for the planet than conventional HFC coolants.
