Why Isn’t the Government Protecting Farm Workers From the Bird Flu? 08/07/2024

Check out this article from the New Republic featuring Farmworker Justice VP of Strategy and Programs Alexis Guild speaking about government failure to protect farmworkers from bird flu. “They worry about lost wages or, even worse, any kind of employer retaliation, including losing their jobs,” said Alexis Guild, vice president of strategy and programs at Farmworker Justice. They may not even be aware of the risks or symptoms of bird flu, she said.

Why Isn’t the Government Protecting Farm Workers From the Bird Flu? Four people on dairy farms have contracted the disease, but small farms exist in a regulatory no-man’s-land.

“When it comes to essential occupations that keep our country running, few are as vital as our nation’s farmworkers. Yet farmworkers are not afforded many of the same rights as other workers. And during a time when we are experiencing extreme weather conditions, wildfire events, and other potential health risks, we must ensure that farmworkers have the protections they need to stay safe and healthy. It is estimated that half of all farmworkers are U.S. citizens, and the other half undocumented, regardless of status, they are not protected by federal labor safety standards and are thus often forced to perform this backbreaking work in incredibly toxic and dangerous work environments.

“As we take time to acknowledge the workers who put food on our tables, and as a vital workforce behind the U.S. food system, we must redouble our efforts to ensure farmworkers are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. For the well-being of all.” --Farmworker Justice CEO Ronald Estrada

Any fruit in season requires labor-intensive work that is exhausting. Yet, farmworkers face abuse, harassment, poor working conditions and neglect. Protections must be put in place to keep our nation’s farmworkers safe.

With figs in season, farmworkers spend many hours on ladders picking them from trees, risking injury from falls. Farmworkers deserve adequate protections to ensure their health and safety.

07/18/2024

Heat illness is something farmworkers constantly have to deal with. They are being put in harm's way to pick the food we need to survive. We must push to have nationwide heat protections for farmworkers.
