Iowa Skeet Shooting Association

The annual Grizzly S***t Tournament took place this past weekend and saw 55 competitors from Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois and Missouri. The weather was great and the scores reflected that. Saturday night's meal was catered by the wonderful Hickory Park and the Grizzly ice cream treats were plentiful.

The Iowa S***t Shooting Association held the annual Iowa State S***t Championships this past weekend at New Pioneer Clay Target Center. The tournament was a great success with many great scores as well as personal bests and concluded with a .410 bore hat being shot. We would like to thank all competitors who competed this year in the event as well as the youth who participated in the "Back-of-the-bus" shootoff for free ammo and fun. If you are a junior shooter or know a junior shooter, next year's junior shootoff will be bigger. Tell your friends to mark it on the calendar. Below is the list of podium finishers. We are 2 weeks away from the 2024 Iowa State S***t Championships. Looking forward to seeing everyone 7/26-7/28!

This year's Zone 5 S***t Championships had reasonable participation but was down a little bit for the fact it was sandwiched between the Northbrook S***t Classic and the state shoot. Nonetheless, Iowa shooters were present and made their presence known. Kamilla Brindley shot her personal best (tying her brother with 99s) in the 12 gauge and was in the gun champ shootoff. They lost to 5-time(?) World Champion Mike Peterson so I suppose we could let it slide.

This year's Iowa State S***t Championships was possibly the most competitive one in history?!?! I looked back through many years of results and as far back as I can look Iowa hasn't had 3 HOAs 396 or above. In fact there there were only 3 HOAs on record better than a 396 (all three by Boyd Wickman) and the odds are slim that 1 or 2 other competitors were close to Boyd in those 3 years based off of what scores I can see.

In my analysis of other states shoots this year, which has been most of them. Iowa has been one of the most competitive states in the country. The Pennsylvania State Championships was hosted the same weekend as ours and saw similar results from 176 four-gun shooters. Thanks to everyone who made this tournament possible!

The 2023 Iowa State S***t Championships were a great success. It was wonderful to have increased participation and some great scores were shot. A full report of finishes will be coming soon.

This year's annual Northbrook S***t Classic, held at the beautiful Northbrook S***t Sports Club proved once again that the best shooters in the world will come to the Midwest. 192 entrants from all over the country shot this event and scores were high as always. Just because there aren't a lot of Iowa names mentioned for top finishers, doesn't mean we weren't there. It just shows the level of competition that was also there.

Tournaments like this are important for your development as a s***t shooter in Iowa. It brings the best of the best in the sport to a facility fairly close to home and shows shooters what it takes to compete at an elite level. Plus, it gives you a chance to meet all of the stars from the Clay Target Nation magazine. Please make plans to attend this tournament in the future.

The 2023 Northstar took place 7/14 - 7/16 at the beautiful Minneapolis Gun Club. This shoot program was changed this year to include a handicapped 5-man team event between local states that proved to boost participation (77 shooters). Team Nebraska was the victor of this event by a relatively narrow margin over us.

Though this tournament should always be on the schedule of Iowa shooters, the buckles, the money, the annual chance at fame and the camaraderie were proven this year and show that next year this event will be a must attend.

Iowa was represented quite well this past weekend in a windy Minneapolis venue for the Northstar. Final results aren't available yet but never fear, there will be full event coverage as soon as possible.

North Star Open

The 2023 Kolar U.S. Open took place this last weekend and Iowa shooters made big things happen. As many people know this shoot is an I-Shoot format so it was held collectively at 14 clubs across the U.S. collecting approximately 700 shooters.

At a tournament this size, it is tough to get recognition unless you are perfect or near to perfect. Other Iowa shooters were present for this event and shot some good scores that didn’t make it to the class or gun champ level.
