Illinois Payroll Jobs Up, Unemployment Rate Stable in April
According to data released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security - IDES and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the unemployment rate remains unchanged at 4.8 percent, while nonfarm payrolls increased +7,300 in April.
"Expanded payroll jobs and a stable unemployment rate are both further indications that the Illinois labor market and economy remain strong," said Deputy Governor Andy Manar. "IDES is committed to continuing to provide jobseekers and employers the resources they need to take advantage of new and expanding workforce opportunities."
In April, the industry sectors with the largest over-the-month job gains included: Professional and Business Services (+4,900), Private Education and Health Services (+3,400), and Leisure and Hospitality (+1,900).

Meet the Board – John Castillo
John Castillo is a current Board Member and Director of Operations for Domeny Tool & Stamping Company.
In addition to his commitment to the Workforce Development Board, John is an active member of the Army Reserve where he has served for more than 15 years holding jobs such as Firefighter, Drill Instructor, and Operations Management. John is also a huge advocate for upskilling the new and incumbent workforce within Illinois and often serves on committee boards or discussion panels involving school curriculums and talent management topics. He volunteers as a kid’s Jiu Jitsu coach in his spare time.

In addition to her leadership role with the Workforce Development Board, Carlotta currently serves as Affiliate Research Faculty for the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She also has more than 15 years of experience working with organizations on organizational development, learning and development, change management, workplace conflict, and DEI. Carlotta has a diverse background in speaking, consulting, and coaching business leaders, HR management, and individual clients to support behavior and organizational change, and is a certified Prosci Change Management Practitioner, EEO Investigator, and Crucial Conversations Instructor.

Meet the Board – Board Chair Kimberly Wimer
Kimberly Wimer is the current Board Chair and Human Resources Manager for Laser Precision, LLC.
In addition to her leadership role with the Workforce Development Board, Kimberly has supported key initiatives at Laser Precision that have advocated for promoting manufacturing careers via high school career path events, established a new internship program, and tapped into talent at local job fairs.
Kimberly was also named one of Crain’s 2020 Notable Women in Manufacturing, which spotlights 34 accomplished professionals who are making a difference in the traditionally male-dominated field. Laser Precision was also named the 2023 Youth Employer of the Year by the NAWDP - National Association of Workforce Development Professionals.

DCEO and IMEC Launch Made in Illinois Grant Program to Boost Manufacturing
Governor JB Pritzker, the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO), and the Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC) today launched $1 million in funding for the Made in Illinois Grant Program.
The Made in Illinois program provides up to $50,000 in matching grant funding to small- and mid-sized Illinois manufacturers to support innovation and strategic advancements in manufacturing.

Supported by FHI 360's National Institute for Work and Learning (NIWL), we are very excited to formally kick off Illinois’ first-ever Youth Development Practitioner Apprenticeship (YDPA) training initiative.
Over the next two days, FHI 360, serving as the supporting partner for the YDPA, will deliver training to apprentices, train-the-trainer style sessions to employers and apprentice supervisors, as well as training materials to ensure a positive and rewarding experience for both the apprentice and the employer.
