Due to increased mosquitoes in the region, the city will perform the first City-wide adult mosquito control application under the core program this evening, Wednesday, July 31, 2024, into Thursday morning, weather conditions permitting. The application will occur from dusk until dawn and be performed with neighboring communities.

Any City residents wishing to be notified of future adult mosquito control applications can register for service notifications at the Clarke portal/resident hotline at www.clarkeportal.com

The One In Five Foundation For Kids

Waukegan, Illinois - The One In Five Foundation For Kids, a national nonprofit organization formed in response to the May 2022 Uvalde, Texas school shooting, announced Monday morning that it will be recognizing Waukegan High School Resource Officer (SRO) Brian Falotico with its National Award for Heroism. This after Falotico — who has been working at the HS campus for over 9 years, was recently credited by school, law enforcement & district officials for his lengthy service protecting and fostering hundreds of positive relationships with students.

Founder of the nonprofit student advocacy and violence prevention group; formed in response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in May 2022, in Uvalde, Texas, Daniel Chapin, noted in the release Monday, that several nominations for recognition came from parents and students, "The relationship and dynamic between Officer Falotico and his students illustrates, to the highest degree, the intrinsic value of placing individuals such as this within the often misunderstood and undervalued SRO position in schools. From long-term mentorship after, to providing a lunchtime refuge from cafeteria stress to developing enough trust to get leads on a crime committed in the city and more, to his empathetic, unique understanding of student life - Officer Falotico does more than most in the general public realize to foster peace and a positive school culture to prevent violence and allow students to be, well, simply students again... We salute officer Falotico & the department he serves.. Heroes still wear badges. And, true heroes do not simply arise when a need arises. Like, Falotico, they work daily to prevent harm from ever visiting our student's classrooms."

The foundation noted that the officer joins other individuals nationally to receive recognitions through its award program, including Casey Orloski, out of Ohio, who recently was granted a student heroism award after reporting a bullet in his schools bathroom, which later proved as part of a school shooting plan against students, the Nashville Police Department, following their response to the Covenant School shooting and officers with the Pittsburgh Police Department.

The Waukegan Park District is now accepting applications for the Before & After School Experience (B.A.S.E.). The program will be on weekdays from Monday, August 12, 2024, to Friday, May 23, 2025, at the Belvidere Recreation Center at 412 S. Lewis Avenue in Corrine J. Rose Park. Open to students from kindergarten to fifth grade, the unique daycare program will engage students in safe and enriching activities, including arts, crafts, games, sports, and more. Learn more about the environmental cleanup at the Open House Informational Session on July 9th at Trinity AME Church (210 South Ave). City staff and environmental consultants will be available from 3:30pm-6:30pm to discuss the cleanup and answer questions. This cleanup will help forge a new legacy along our lakefront.

The Waukegan Park District presents the 2024 American Independence Parade on Sunday, June 30, 2024, stepping off at 1pm and traveling north on Sheridan Road from Franklin Street to Jack Benny Drive. See you along the parade route?

NOTE: The parade route will be closed to traffic from 12pm to 3:30pm on the day of the parade. During this time, only authorized vehicles, including public safety vehicles and parade participants, will be allowed on the parade route. Due to the street closure, Pace Suburban Bus Routes 565, 568, and 571 will operate with a detour.

When we talk about our conservation efforts in the dunes, Plover repopulation successes, and even the meticulous upkeep at our Waukegan Municipal Beach, we have to consider the people that spend their days on site making these efforts possible such as the wonderful volunteers from Lake County Audubon Society, Waukegan Public Works, Waukegan Police Department and our very own lakefront coordinator Lisa May! We are so thrilled by these collective wins! Thank you!

This provides an opportunity for our community to understand our efforts, learn about the environment, and how they get their drinking water…..from a young age!

Congratulations to our new Plover parents!!!!

Our two favorite 2023 piping plovers, Blaze and Pepper, returned to their release site in May, fell in love, and had four eggs!!! Our monitors diligently watched as three of the four eggs hatched yesterday morning! The chicks face an uphill battle for survival, but we are rooting for our favorite little fluffballs!! As a city, we designated the Great Lakes Piping Plover as our official city bird on May 20, 2024. We will continue to support the protection and conservation of our lakefront and the unique dune and swale habitat crucial to the recovery of the Great Lakes piping plover and the many other plant and animal species that call the Lake Plain their home.

¡¡¡¡Enhorabuena a nuestros nuevos padres chorlito!!!!

Nuestros dos chorlitejos comunes favoritos de 2023, Blaze y Pepper, volvieron a su lugar de liberación en mayo, se enamoraron y ¡¡¡tuvieron cuatro huevos!!! Nuestros monitores observaron diligentemente cómo tres de los cuatro huevos eclosionaban ayer por la mañana. Los polluelos se enfrentan a una dura batalla por la supervivencia, pero estamos apoyando a nuestras bolitas de peluche favoritas. Como ciudad, designamos al chorlitejo patinegro de los Grandes Lagos como ave oficial de nuestra ciudad el 20 de mayo de 2024. Seguiremos apoyando la protección y conservación de nuestra costa lacustre y del hábitat único de dunas y ciénagas, crucial para la recuperación del chorlitejo patinegro de los Grandes Lagos y de las muchas otras especies de plantas y animales que consideran la llanura lacustre su hogar.
