One of the first known uses of shorthand in a court room was when Joseph Gurney used his father Thomas Gurney's system of symbols during the trial of Warren Hastings, an English merchant accused of high crimes, in 1788.
George Kerr Anderson developed a shorthand machine in 1889 that had the first keyboard that allowed two or more of its keys to be depressed simultaneously. Anderson's invention also used English characters instead of the previously used code.

There are a number of reasons why a discussion might be taken off the record, and the simple signal of “off the record” is usually enough to tell the court reporter to stop recording. Just make sure that you let the court reporter know to start recording again when the discussion is done.
A court reporting job where the reporter is given a written list of questions which they have to ask the deponent themselves and report the answers is called an “interrogatory”. This formal set of questions must be answered under oath.
A stenographer learns how to read what he or she has typed as well as simply transcribing what people are saying in trials, depositions and elsewhere. This is important because a stenographer may be asked to read back a certain statement from a witness.
