BSA Troop 146 - West Hartford

Troop 146 had an incredible experience during this year's Historical Trip to Philadelphia! We embarked on a journey to the very site where Washington crossed the Delaware, wandered through the historic streets of Old Town Philadelphia, and delved into the intriguing remnants of the Eastern State Penitentiary. Our adventure was not only fun-filled but also enriched our understanding of American history.

Troop 146 had a blast at Ski Butternut in Great Barrington, MA, mastering the snowy mountains with amazing views. Later, memories were made at Camp Strang in Goshen, CT, with laughter around the campfire. ,

Troop 146 had a blast hosting West Hartford Webelos Packs last Thursday! Three stations showcased our troop's spirit. Special thanks to acting SPL Oliver Beckley and ASPL Alex Bolton. ,

Exciting News! Evan Russell, a senior at Conard High School, has achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout! Evan's scouting journey includes roles like Den Chief, Patrol Leader, and Senior Patrol Leader. He's been an active participant in outdoor adventures, from historical trips to Seabase crew member in 2023.

Academically, Evan's stellar record includes the National Honor Society, Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish, and the US Presidential Award for Academic Excellence. As a Bits and Bytes Club member, he's been inspiring young minds with coding basics. Now, he's gaining real-world experience at Dunkin' West Hartford. Currently exploring college options like Quinnipiac, UConn, URI, and WPI, Evan is considering a path in pharmacy or biology.

Join us in celebrating Evan's incredible achievements and wishing him continued success on his journey!

Last Thursday's meeting was a blast with Evan's fantastic plan and some indoor Gaga pit games! Now, let's gear up for our Holiday Gift Exchange THIS Thursday! The White Elephant gift swap is usually a blast, so don't forget to bring your wrapped gift. Also, don't forget to come a few minutes early to catch Evan's latest snack sensation! Let's make this gift exchange a year-end highlight!

Troop 146 hiked to the top of Talcott Mountain this weekend, where our Scouts embraced the winter chill with backpacking stoves and shared hearty meals. Hot food, shared stories, and amazing views made it a memorable experience!

Here are some winter hiking tips to keep the adventure alive:

- Use the “C-O-L-D” method to stay warm. Keep your insulating layers Clean and fluffy; avoid Overheating by dressing in layers; keep Layers loose for proper circulation; and keep Dry by avoiding clothes that absorb moisture.
- Be prepared - the more more ingredients you can mix and pre-cut the less time you will have to spend mixing and chopping in the cold.
- Stay hydrated - drink about 1 liter (32 ounces) every two hours while hiking.

Axe throwing is back, and it was a hit! Our last axe throwing event was just before the pandemic, and we're thrilled to report that it was a "resounding success." Almost every scout joined in for a night filled with excitement and camaraderie.

This October, we had another fantastic campout at Moses Scout Reservation in Russell, MA! We enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities, including the ever-popular Gaga pit, and provided great advancement opportunities for our younger Scouts. And the best part? No rain! ,

Last week, we honored our nation's flag in a solemn and respectful Flag Retirement Ceremony. With the utmost reverence, we retired old and tattered flags, showing our commitment to the values they represent. As Scouts, we are proud to fulfill this important duty and continue our tradition of service. Thank you to all who participated and supported this meaningful event.
