Why is thoracic rotation so important? We’re so glad you asked! 😉
The bones of the Thoracic spine start about 4 fingers width above your belly button. From there up the spine is designed to rotate.
Healthy range is around 35° compared to only 10° available in the lumbar spine.
When you twist to put your coat on, or reach across for the seatbelt the thoracic spine is hopefully doing most of that job. Sadly, due to the nature of the world we live in, most of us get quite restricted in this area.🤯
The rotation needs to happen someplace, so your clever body often produces that motion lower down lumbar spine. It’s a bit like asking the landscaper for a haircut.. while s/he might get the job done, it’s not going to be pretty. When the lumbar spine is constantly asked to produce rotation the deep stabilizers (transverse abdominis, multifidus, internal obliques) tend to give up the ghost and are left terribly unstable in this area!!
The solution: Mobilize the thoracic spine. Then USE that range every day! 🥳
