Sergeant Michael C. Chesna #117
Weymouth Police Department
End of Watch: July 15, 2018
On this day we remember Sergeant Micheal C. Chesna, a 6 year veteran of the Weymouth Police Department who was shot and killed after responding to reports of an erratic operator near South Shore Hospital. Upon arrival, he observed the vehicle had crashed and the driver was vandalizing a home nearby. Sergeant Chesna was struck in the head with a large rock, disarmed and fatally shot by the suspect, who also fatally shot Vera Adams in her home. The suspect was subsequently arrested by responding officers and taken into custody. The suspect has since been charged with two counts of homicide. Sergeant Chesna was 42 years old.
Sergeant Chesna was a U.S. Army Veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife and two children. Sergeant Michael C. Chesna five years have passed, you are not forgotten.
Please remember that if you are observing the Weymouth 3rd of July Fireworks Celebration from a boat, it is important to arrive a couple hours in advance and respect the security zone 100 yard diameter around the Fireworks Barge just northwest of the #22 Red Navigation Marker. Be mindful while anchoring, do so in a safe anchorage recognized on a nautical chart. The channel will be restricted to traffic flow at approximately 800pm, 1 1/2 hour prior to commencement. It is a good idea to make sure you have all safety equipment required and that navigation lights are in working condition and visible. It is recommended to proceed with caution and make headway speed only (6mph) while traversing the Fore River after the display and monitor your VHF radio. There will be a heavy police presence along the Fore River for the safety of all spectators. Thank you and Happy Independence Day!
