It is estimated that over 3 million Americans have glaucoma, and only half know they have it.

There may be no symptoms warning you that you have it.

Until it reaches end stages, glaucoma mainly affects the peripheral vision.

The best way to protect your vision is with annual eye exams.

Intraocular pressure (IOP) is measured for a number of reasons, and we include it with each comprehensive eye exam as one way to evaluate your risk for glaucoma. You may recall the yellow 👁 drop followed by the blue light that comes uncomfortably close to your eye - that is measuring IOP! Keep watching to see your view, followed by mine (the 👩🏼‍⚕️).

New year, new glasses. 👓 🤓

01/09/2021

It’s a new year, so why not a reintroduction!

I’m Dr. Tatlock, and I’ve been seeing patients at Jury Eye since early 2019.

I grew up in southwest Kansas, but moved to Texas to attend college. After earning my undergraduate degree at TCU (Go Frogs!), I moved to Houston to attend the University of Houston College of Optometry. Four years later, with my doctorate of optometry, I found myself back in Kansas.

I enjoy working in primary eye care on a daily basis. It allows me to get to know my patients, and spend the time necessary to get them seeing clearly and living comfortably.

You can find me in our Derby location Wednesdays and Thursdays or in our Wichita location Fridays and Saturdays.

In this image I’m performing binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy, BIO, to examine the inside of the back of the eye. Look for more info on this in a later post!

Have you tried on any of our frames?

Send us some pics of you wearing your favorite glasses - this brand or any other! We’d love to feature you!

One word for 2021: Available.

What does being available mean to you?

At Jury Eye, it means: being accessible, qualified, and willing to serve our patients - new and existing.

2020 was a difficult year for many people for many reasons. There was a period of time when we, along with our peers, were closed to routine eye care. Eye care wasn’t the only thing put on hold as the world took a pause to flatten the curve. This is why available is the word we’ve chosen for 2021.

Jury Eye plans to be here for routine eye care, updating glasses, emergency visits, anything you may need to improve your vision, eye health, and comfort. While 2021 could take us in any direction, we feel it important to let our patients know that they can contact us for any eye care needs that come up along the way.

Chime in with your

What are you focusing on as we move through 2021?

See ya later 2020 ✌️

And hello 2021 👋

We hope the new year brings you health, happiness, and clear vision.

frames. What do you think?

Your first view when starting an eye exam - that little farmhouse that never quite clears up! Have you wondered what this machine is doing? It provides a few important pieces of information for the doctor, including:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Keratometry, which is a measurement of the curvature of the cornea (the clear front window of the eye). This helps us determine the power of the cornea and shows measurements of astigmatism.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Corneal Topography, a map of the surface of the cornea. This allows the doctors to assess any distortions which can lead to vision issues and monitor different types of eye disease.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Swipe to see an image of one of our employees corneal topography!

Reduce the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy by controlling blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is important to eat a healthy and balanced diet in combination with exercising regularly. A healthy diet includes colorful fruits and vegetables, and other whole foods. You can always ask us or your primary care doctor for further guidance! Exercise can be anything from walking regularly to biking, running, HIIT - find something you enjoy!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you smoke, consider quitting, and keep all recommended follow ups with both your eye doctor and primary care physician.

11/20/2020

Currently 1 in 10 Americans has diabetes, and are at a heightened risk for visual impairment due to diabetic retinopathy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Did you know that dilated eye exams annually, or more, help to prevent up to 95% of diabetes related vision loss? An eye exam enables early signs to be detected, leading to early care and treatment.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Symptoms can include:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- floaters or spots in vision⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- blurry or distorted vision⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- fluctuating vision⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- double vision⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- eye pain⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- corneal abrasions or wounds that are slow to heal⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is important to visit your eye doctor at the onset of any of these symptoms. However, having an eye exam can allow issues to be caught early, before symptoms develop, preventing further damage.

Summer is on the way, and we are already seeing plenty of sunshine!

Did you know that the risk from UV damage to our eyes and skin is cumulative? Sunglasses are as important as SPF when it comes to keeping our eyes and the skin around them healthy and protected! Also - squinting can contribute to wrinkles and deepening those fine lines in the skin around our eyes. Sunglasses on = less squinting!

We are offering 20% any non-prescription sunglasses now through June 20th (the first day of summer!) Please call 316-247-6515 to schedule a time to view our selection, and you can schedule your eye exam, too!

The plan to re-open Kansas was announced yesterday evening, and one recommendation is to wear a mask when in a public setting. This is new for all of us, but why not use it as an opportunity for self expression!

Here is Dr. Jury supporting his favorite team - Go Chiefs!

At the office we will continue:
- Strict cleaning standards
- Screening of patients for symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath.
- To request you please come to your appointment alone (unless a minor or in need of physical assistance) Drivers will be asked to stay in the car. This allows us to follow social distancing guidelines still in place for phase 1 while offering necessary eye care.

We are still offering telemedicine as an options, contact the office for details.

If you have access to a cloth mask, please wear it to your appointment.

Are your eyes feeling itchy? Watery? Do they look red?

These can be symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, and there are things that can be done - from removing and cleaning contacts more regularly to over the counter or prescription eye drops.

You don't have to just live with it! Call us for an appointment to discuss the best treatment for your case.

With everyone staying at home - it is likely this is now an underestimate!

Common symptoms of digital eye strain include blurred vision, headaches, dry eyes, eyestrain, and neck and shoulder pain. The more screen time you have, the increase in symptom severity!
If you are experiencing these symptoms, there are a few things you can do:
- Call us! It is important to have an up to date prescription and have any vergence or accommodative issues assessed.
- 20-20-20 rule, have you heard of it? For every 20 minutes spent looking at a screen, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This along with blinking exercises can minimize risk for dryness.
- If dryness persists, keep artificial tears hand. Ask us for specific recommendations.
- Reduce your screen brightness and contrast, dim nearby lighting if possible, and consider adding an anti-glare/anti-reflective coating to your glasses. Opting for a blue light filter is another thing to consider.
- Keep a good screen viewing posture and your viewing distance between 20 and 28 inches from eye to screen.
- If you wear contacts, ask at your next appointment about brands recommended for digital device users. (which is basically all of us, right??)

Did you know that sitting for long periods of time can increase your risk of heart disease and diabetes?
It can be hard to stay active during this time we are required to stay at home, but remember why we are doing this - to stay healthy! To stay healthy, though, we must continue to move!
Go for a walk or run outside.
Get in a workout in your living room - there are tons of online options if you need guidance.
All of this can be done while social distancing.
We are always looking for new ideas - Let us know how you are staying active and healthy!

Do you wear contacts? Keep your eyes healthy and seeing well throughout this public health crisis - and beyond - by following a few simple steps:

- Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water before inserting contact lenses (or putting on glasses!) and again before taking them out.
- Throw your daily lenses out each night.
- Disinfect your two-week and monthly contact lenses daily with fresh solution.
- if you feel sick with cold or flu-like symptoms, switch to glasses. (Always keep a good backup pair around!)
