Wichita Park & Recreation is introducing a new rate structure to better serve our community, effective September 1, 2024. This update includes distinct rates for residents and non-residents, ensuring fair access to our facilities and programs while continuing to provide high-quality services to all. Residents will enjoy lower rates as a benefit of community membership, while non-residents will have the opportunity to participate at slightly higher rates. By implementing this structure, we are aligning with best practices adopted by other Park & Recreation agencies across the nation. This change aims to enhance community engagement and support the sustainability of our parks and recreation services.

This week, several women from our team attended the KRPA Women's Leadership Summit at the Longhouse Visitors Center in Overland Park. The summit centered around the 34 Clifton Strengths, where our ladies delved into how leveraging each other's top 5 strengths can boost workplace efficiency, maximize productivity, and foster a stronger team. The breakout sessions were particularly empowering, as they focused on uplifting one another and emphasizing our strengths instead of our weaknesses. Our ultimate goal was to become better leaders and community servants, driving positive change within our organization and beyond.

🎉 New Sand Volleyball Court Coming to Evergreen Park! 🏐 We're thrilled to announce that Evergreen Park is getting a brand new outdoor sand volleyball court, thanks to the support and enthusiasm from our community members! 🌳✨

The new court will provide a fun and active space for everyone to enjoy, helping to further activate the park for families and friends.

Details:
- Location: Southeast side of the park, next to the basketball court.
- Court Size: The sand area is 40’ x 80’, with a playing court size of 29’6” x 59’. Perfect for both 4-on-4 and 6-on-6 games!
- Net: 32’ wide, with adjustable standards for men's and women's play.

The court will be free to use on a first-come, first-served basis, with the possibility of adding a rental option in the future. We plan to have a ball available on-site—just check it out with a Driver’s License!

We can’t wait for the opening ceremony on Friday, September 6 at 9:00 AM, which will mark the official launch of this new amenity. Let’s make Evergreen Park an even more vibrant place to connect and play! 🎉

This league provides an opportunity for players with disabilities to join an athletic league with their peers participating in a variety of sports.

All Miracle League participants will receive a team jersey and awesome swag. Every athlete will be partnered with a Buddy to assist during the game.

🐾 Exciting Updates at K-9 Rooster Dog Park! 🐾 Construction is currently underway at K-9 Rooster Dog Park as we work on renovations! 🚧 The park is temporarily closed, with the project expected to be completed in the 4th quarter of 2024.

🌳 Wichita Park & Rec is committed to conserving water during Stage 2 Drought 💧As we navigate Stage 2 water restrictions, our Forestry and Aquatics teams are going the extra mile to care for Wichita's trees. We’re utilizing four large trucks, each holding anywhere from 300 to 1,200 gallons of water, to drain our pools and repurpose that water to keep our city's trees healthy. These trucks refill 3 to 5 times daily, ensuring our trees get the water they need during this dry period.

Additionally, at the Kansas Wildlife Exhibit, we've taken steps to maintain the water level in the beloved little pond south of the exhibit. This park pond is a cherished feature of Riverside Park, serving as a habitat for various wildlife including fish, turtles, frogs, ducks, geese, fishing egrets and herons, dragonflies, and even the occasional muskrat.

We are proud to do our part in conserving water while also caring for our green spaces and wildlife. Together, we can make a difference! 💚

🐾 Dog Days of Summer is Back! 🐾

Bring your pups out to College Hill Pool on Monday, August 12th for the ultimate doggy splash party! 🌊 Due to early pool closures this year, we're making the most of it with this paw-some event! 🐕❤️

Event Details:

5:30-6:00 PM: Small dogs get exclusive access to the pool! 🐶
6:00 PM: Big dogs dive in! 🐾 Small dogs can stay, but it might get crowded.

Safety First:
The pool's chemical levels are safe for dogs, but not for humans. No swimming, but you can wade up to your knees. 🌡️
Kids must stay out of the pool while dogs are splashing around.
All dogs need to be leashed when they're not in the water. 🐾

Fees:
$10 per dog 🐕
$1 per spectator 👀
