Hello, everyone! This week we will not be having a large group meeting since it is fall break- so we hope that everyone has an excellent break and time off from school.
In other news, our parade float got third place (woohoo!), so a huge thank you to everyone who helped make that possible. In addition, Tucker Downs won the title of Homecoming King (woohoo! x2). It was definitely an eventful and successful weekend for our club.
Stay tuned next week for our next meeting. :-)
Here are some pictures from our rockin' game night!! Feel free to tag yourself and others in the pictures. โบ๏ธ
Game night was a success!! Thanks to all who came out tonight and joined in on the fun.
Also, both Tucker Downs and Serena Jayde Randolph made it into the finals for Homecoming Court, so make sure to continue voting for them to be your Homecoming King and Queen!!! ๐๐๐๐
Hello, fellow zoo science club members! A text was sent out last night to figure out what time and day works best for those that were interested in helping design and prepare the float for homecoming. Based off of everyone's responses. We will be meeting WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY evening THIS WEEK starting at 6 in science LAB 124. If you did not get a text but are still interested in helping, please feel free to come or message Serena Jayde Randolph about finding another way to help if you cannot make it. The more the merrier. ๐
Hello, everyone! Just a friendly reminder that the ballots are up for Homecoming Royalty. If you want to see Tucker and Serena become finalists, make sure to vote for them outside of the dining hall or in the library. Voting ends Friday at 4:00 pm!!!! ๐๐๐
Don't forget if you were interested in taking care of an AC/DC animal, applications are due today! Put them in the blue folder on the desk inside the lab! ๐๐ข๐
Thanks to everyone who came out to the meeting this evening! For those of you that were unable to attend, here are some of the things we discussed:
- we all introduced ourselves
- we discussed what members can expect from the club: on campus events like chili cook off, game nights, holiday parties; off campus events (zoo trips); and fundraising
- in addition we went over club dues (this is a payment we ask from members who would like to attend zoo trips to help cover costs) and the dues are $5 a semester, which you can pay to Mathews or one of the executive council members
- we also went over how in one of our upcoming meetings we will vote on a freshman representative to join our executive council so if you are interested in this position then stay tuned
- we would like to have group meetings every two weeks on the same week night each time, we took a vote at the meeting and Wednesday nights at 7 seemed to work best. We will be posting a poll shortly to allow members to vote who were not there, so this day and time may change
- we made tshirts last year and we will be keeping the same design for this year. If you are interested in having a tshirt, buy a shirt from the store that is a light color (most students chose grey last year) that is cotton or cotton/polyester blend and turn it into Mathews
- if you are interested in taking care of an animal in the care lab, please contact Sam Borgerson for an application, she would like to have those turned in by the end of the week
- lastly, we took group photos ๐
If you have any questions, feel free to contact one of the executive council members or reach out to us on this page!
Here's the group photos from tonight's meeting- it was a great turn out and it was nice to meet everyone! Can't wait for the rest of the semester. ๐
In case you missed it:
Patrick Mathews has club t-shirts for everyone who ordered one by providing him with a shirt. He'll need $10 for each shirt you get.
Zoo Immersions class is on their way to the Tulsa Zoo!
For anyone who is interested, there is a great app out there (for iPhone at least) called "Story of Life" which is a collection of more than 40 programs and series that Sir David Attenborough has narrated, including scenes and clips exclusive to this app and directed by Attenborough for just this reason. Also, it is a free app. I suspect many of you already have, but if you haven't check it out!

T-SHIRTS:
As discussed in previous club meetings, those of you who want a club t-shirt can bring in a shirt, that we will take in to have a design printed on. The shirt design will include the club logo that is the profile picture of this page. T-shirts that you bring in should be light gray in color, and made of cotton or a cotton/polyester blend. Bring your shirt in To Dr. Mathews by March 17.
For those of you who signed up for the trip to Fort Worth and are still wanting to go, we will be having a meeting on Wednesday at 6:30 in Science 100, where we will go over travel, pricing, and lodging arrangements.
We are currently trying to plan when we are going to eave next week for Omaha. Please vote as soon as you can! Head over to the Zoo Science Group to vote.
Hey all! Don't forget Lindy is doing a talk about conservation in Nepal at noon in Science 100! There will be lunch provided so be there!
Hey everyone! If you haven't heard, we have talked to the Ralph Mitchell Zoo in Independence and they are excited to have us back! We have a poll setup on the Zoo Science Group regarding the date (go vote on that if you haven't yet), but otherwise, I wanted to post a little bit of information about what we have done in years past and what to expect. We last did a service trip there three years ago, back when Quillans still roamed the school. The Ralph Mitchell Zoo is a small, unaccredited zoo owned and operated by the City of Independence. Strangely enough, it is also a drive-through zoo from what I remember. Like many small-town zoos, they live on a hand-to-mouth basis and understaffed. Keepers are responsible not only for animal care, but probably also most of the maintenance, construction, and horticulture around the zoo, along with most other operations. As a result, they benefit greatly from volunteer and were delighted to have us over when we went three years ago! Last time, we helped them construct secondary containment around the elk enclosure. One of us would watch the male elk to make sure he was still fully sedated while the rest of us worked hard constructing the new fencing. It was very rewarding work and it was fun seeing the female elk plundering some of our labor as you can see in one of the pictures. Between good company, happy keepers, cool animals, and satisfying work, it was one heck of a day! This time, our projects will depend largely on how long we'll be staying and how many of us there are. I'll let you all know what we get planned out, but first, I need a rough list of how many people to expect and when we are going to go, that way, the zoo can come up with a list of projects for us! If you have any questions, comments, or requests, feel free to post them in the comments below. Thanks!
