Join us in congratulating Junior Josiah Watney for being hired for an internship this summer with Niskanen Center as a Government Affairs Intern.

Josiah is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in History and Politics with a Law and Policy concentration and a Bachelor of Science in Finance. He expects to graduate May of 2026.

Even though Josiah is pursuing two degrees, he still finds time to participate in activities across campus. He is the Student Government Association Vice President, is a member of the Singing Quakers, works as a Spiritual Life Assistant (SLA), and is an Academic Resources Center (ARC) Peer Tutor. Josiah is also involved in the Student Led Investing Committee, Chapel Worship, Theatre, and Model UN. That is impressive! Way to go, Josiah!

Josiah remembers he found this opportunity online and applied without hesitation. He reflects on aspects of his education that made him feel prepared: “The leadership experience that I gained through SGA has been very influential in giving me the confidence and responsibility skills to succeed in getting this internship. Additionally, the communication experience through Model UN was very formative.”

Watney also mentions two professors who played a crucial role in his preparation: “Dr. Fox has been a great mentor as my political science professor and has given me a real passion to pursue public policy as a career. Dr. Ceramella has also been a great mentor as my economics professor, giving me the confidence to succeed in a subject I was nervous about.”

Josiah suggests what students should do when they pursue the same opportunity as his: “I would tell them to dial in on what makes you a unique candidate. It is a competitive field, but you can get a great internship if you can learn to sell yourself! It also wouldn’t hurt to get some experience in local politics/government beforehand, even as a volunteer.”

He also shares what stood out on his resume: “I worked as the city management intern in my hometown which looked great on a resume.”

Josiah expands on the lessons he took from his internship search: “I learned that accepting rejections is inevitable in a competitive field. I applied to about 12 different places, and I only got accepted by about three. But it’s all part of the process, and you can’t let rejections discourage you from continually applying! I also learned about the work think tanks and government agencies do only by researching the places I wanted to apply to! So even if you get rejected, you can still learn a lot.”

Lastly, Josiah shares a few considerations about his experience so far: “Living in DC and being surrounded by such smart and driven people has been an amazing experience already! I can’t wait to return to Friends in the fall and apply what I have learned about myself and the world!”

Join us in congratulating Friends University Junior Kelli Wegerer for being hired for a summer internship with A Better Choice as a Client Advocate.

Kelli is graduating in May 2025 with a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Formation and Ministry with a minor in Psychology. Outside of the classroom, Kelli is involved in some activities across campus: She is on the basketball team, works in the Campus Ministries lounge, goes to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and works as an Spiritual Life Assistant (SLA). Way to go, Kelli!

Kelli remembers how she came across this opportunity: ‘’ I had been volunteering at this non-profit for years and I decided to apply to one of their summer internships. I received a call a few weeks after my interview and accepted the job. I am very excited to work there this summer.

Wegerer demonstrates gratitude when reflecting on the people in her journey and aspects that prepared her for this opportunity: “All of the professors that I have so far have been a part of my development as a student and a worker. In the spiritual realm, Professor Wendy Mohler- Seib, Stan Harstine, and Dr. James Bryan Smith have all taught me new things in the past two years of being at Friends. My coach and basketball team have helped me to learn many things about working with all types of people and pushing through hard times.”. Kelli also explains how her jobs on campus helped her with her internship, “Working on Campus Ministries has had a big part in preparation because of the creative work I can do as a Spiritual Life Assistant, and a Student Lounge Worker, planning events and opportunities for students in Campus Ministries.”.

When asked about some advice she would give to students pursuing a job opportunity, Kelli shares the mindset that helps her: “Take some time to reflect on the person god has made you be right now in this point of your life. This helps me to be aware as best as I can about the ways god works through me.”. “Be yourself! There is no one else out there like you, so know that you can bring something unique to a company that no one else can.”.

“It takes a lot of intention in every step of the process. Nothing can be taken lightly. I have also learned that If I focus on being confident in the person I am and what I can offer, and my plan does not work out, it means that what I wanted was not for me.

Lastly, Kelli heartfully reinforces her excitement about the position: “This internship means so much to me. I will be able to help others facing a convicting time in their lives. My heart loves this area of work, so I am excited to see how God works through me.”

Join us in congratulating Friends University Sophomore Abigail Wiiest for being offered a part-time position at the Sedgwick County Zoo as an Education Interpreter. Abigail is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Zoo Science with a concentration in Conservation Science.

Besides the time invested in the classroom, Abigail is also part of other activities around campus: She is part of the Zoo Science Club and the Animal Care Club. Way to go, Abigail!

Wiiest learned about this opportunity from Joe McDowell, one of her former teachers at the Sedgwick County Zoo. Abigail praises the partnership between the Zoo Science program and the Sedgwick County Zoo when reflecting on the aspects of her education that prepared her for this opportunity: “This partnership gives Zoo Science students the opportunities to take classes at the Sedgwick County Zoo taught by zoo professionals. The courses Zoo Science and Zookeeping helped to gain the knowledge needed for this role. I learned zoo operations and history, basic cleaning procedures, and education and interpretation skills.”

Abigail did not hesitate when asked about advice she would give students looking for a similar opportunity: ‘’Go to Career Services and get help with resumes, cover letters, interviews, and other job preparation services.” She also points out how positive her experience was, “I could have figured out how to make a resume and cover letter on my own but Orrin Breckenridge made it easy. His help made my resume and cover letter way better than I had done it myself. I also learned a lot from him about interview preparation.”

Lastly, Abigail shares what she learned from her job search: “Always be confident in your skill set and experience, no matter what experience level you have. Do not get discouraged if you do not have any exposure to exotic animals, for example. Your background and skills are unique, and they matter. Don’t let other people put you down.”
