Happy Hump Day! Week Three at the prison.
The instructors and trainers are working with the pups on focus, loose leash walking and stay. All four of "the Jays" are doing well.

We've learned that JACK is a SNUGGLER.
JILL is a LOVER.
JASMINE loves CHILDREN.
JOEY is a HAPPY PARTY Boy who will love an ACTIVE FAMILY and a FENCED YARD.

All different. All doing wonderfully with their training!

We need help! Any friends or followers available?
We need a quick and dirty... well, not dirty, really...folding pyramid table tent designed for an upcoming event.
Probably would fold to around 4 x 6. We have the language and logos, but design ain't our thang.
If you're familiar with Canva or any other design program, we sure could use some help.
Please message us (oh please!) if you're interested and able.
Thanks SO MUCH.

Happy Labor Day!
As you know, our programs are labors of love.
WEEK THREE at the prison... we'll post updates soon on what we're working on with the pups.

WEEK TWO of training at the prison:
STILL working on bonding (different dogs do it at different times. Right now, Jasmine--whom we fear was likely abused--is very very tentative. Luckily, she has John.)

So, bonding AND *focus and eye contract, *Sit and Down, * Lying on their matts, and * beginning loose leash walking.

Dennis, our very experienced trainer, has both Jack and Jill, because we're down a trainer and only have 3. He is working miracles, we hear. Lucky us.

And Melvin, our newest trainer, has Joey. He is learning quickly and catching on well.

08/28/2024

"The Jays," our 7th class with Jack and Jill, Jasmine, and Joey, are in their 2nd week of training.

People have asked us what our training protocol is. Good question!
As soon as we can get our hands on our instructors' week-by-week lessons, we'll share them.

We can say, though, that the first week is BONDING and name recognition. These dogs come from different shelters, usually not knowing their names at the shelters, and haven't had the greatest of lives.

The men and the instructors (2 of whom come on Monday, and 2 others on Thursday) give a whole lot of love, treats, gentle rubs, and call the dogs their names often.

Usually, the first thing taught that week--depends on the dog!--is sit. There's a hand signal that eventually gets joined with the word.

But, first week, it's all about the love.

When adopting an animal, it is important to remember the 3/3/3 Adoption Rules! Just like moving to a new place, or when we were kids, going to a new school, it sometimes takes time to adjust to new surroundings! It can be the same for animals being adopted out!

Countdown #3: Three days til our pups arrive at the prison! Here's Jasmine.

AND #3 thing about us that some people might not know:
We ain't in it for the money. We lose money on every adopted dog and every fostered animal... (as do many other nonprofits. Hence, we're nonprofits!)

We don't have an Executive Director or a paid staff. We're all-volunteer. We do get help from a wonderful person who assists us very part-time with our records. (She's not staff; she has her own business that helps many businesses and individuals with varied chores from dog-walking and pet-sitting to errands to keeping people organized.)

We do this purely out of love.

Thanks to Elite Canine Training for this great reminder and tip.

We often think of recall as a skill of away. We are calling the dog away from something, the street, another dog, wildlife. But that sets us up to have recall became adversarial. We are pitting the dog against their own desires and often time instincts. Instead we can greatly help our dogs recall in all sorts of situations by viewing recall as a game of Towards, not away.

When we position recall as a game of towards, we are using it as an opportunity for our dogs to seek out reinforcement. It’s their opportunity to come towards us, to join us. If we treat recall as a chance to ask a dog towards us, towards reinforcement, we can see recall as a different experience. It becomes a different game, a different option for our dogs entirely. We are not asking them to come away from a squirrel, we are asking them to join us in a game of chase. We are not asking them to come away from some one up ahead, we are asking them to come and get a delicious snack. We are not asking them to come away from all the smells on the opposite end of the field we are asking them to join us in exploring a new direction.

If you always treat recall as an invitation to play together you will see rather quickly how much more reliable it becomes.
