Giving art a chance to be seen by giving it a place to be shown. Yearly membership Jan.-Dec. Open to all, 15 and over.
A nonprofit organization who’s mission is to give artists of all experience levels a place for their work to be seen and enjoyed. This is the place for all those who love ART!
This past week we had a BUNCH of stuff going on including:
1. Tearing down Under the Sea and hanging Sounds of Music in Art
2. Hosting the reception for Sounds of Music in Art
3. AND we had an Artist Meet-Up Sunday with a short about the upcoming Cold Wax Workshop with Kelly Hodges!
We laughed a lot, learned a lot, asked so many questions, inspired each other, and looked at some great art! Thanks to all who came out to see us. It’s great seeing friends.
We have a ton of other upcoming events - don’t miss out on the fun!
What happens when you combine beeswax, solvent, and resin into your oil paints? Cold Wax. 🐝🎨
Creating a buttery, soft, fluid paste, cold wax is a technique used to elongate your oil paints livability, aids in drying time, increases transparency, and more.
Hosted by Winston-Salem native Kelly Hodges, this workshop is perfect for oil painting aficionados who are looking for a new technique for their work. In the class you’ll learn how to make cold wax, the techniques it can be used for, layering, creating textures, and more.

CALL FOR ART
Once a year, the Associated Artists of Winston-Salem (AAWS) furnishes the Main Gallery of Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts for a highly competitive juried exhibit called ARTIST SPOTLIGHT. This exhibition showcases recent bodies of 2-D and 3-D work from a select number of AAWS members. Since few artists are chosen and the Art Council’s Main Gallery is highly traveled, this is a valuable and renowned opportunity. New this year, monetary awards for First, Second, and Third place will be awarded.
AAWS artists are encouraged to submit a curated, cohesive selection of recent works for this exhibition. Artists may submit up to 20 pieces, of which 5-8 are chosen. A cohesive body of work contains a common thread that reveals an artist’s commitment to a theme, concept, or aesthetics when observed by the viewer. A cohesive selection of work is integral to the creative and professional growth of an artist’s career since it gives patrons, audiences, and curators a solid foundation for identifying your work.

A message from Camryn Collier, AAWS Administrative Assistant, about our History:
“Last week, I had the privilege of visiting the North Carolina Collection in the Public Library Downtown. The Associated Artists Archives are currently being cataloged there by Karen Feeney, the Collection Supervisor. This archive is not public yet, as it is still being processed - so I got a special inside look. It was an indescribable experience to discover parts of our past that a lot of people don’t know or have forgotten,” Collier said.
This archival work is being done primarily through the collaboration of Feeney and Margaret Webster-Shapiro, AAWS’s Immediate Past President and member since 2010. A special thanks to her for making this possible!

We had an absolute BLAST at our Annual Members Meeting a week ago. We made towers from marshmallows and dried spaghetti among other things... Let's just say people got really creative. It sure put a smile on our faces!
Thanks to everyone for another successful year, it means the world to us that we still get to come together over 65 years after our founding. What a treat! See y'all next time. 😜
JUNE ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Our June artist is new to the Associated Artists, Matthew Monk! Joining us in early April, Monk was first featured in our High Point Furniture Market Exhibition at Oliver Home Furnishings. This is Leonardo da Vinci. He lived from the late 1400s to the early 1500s, dying almost 500 years ago. Yet, his name still lives on. The Mona Lisa is printed on shirts, t-shirts, and tote bags worldwide. The Vetruvian Man is taught in every World History class across the globe. The Virgin of the Rocks is heralded as a symbol of the Christian religion. He is the symbol of the Renaissance and a Hero in Art History.
But what makes him so legendary? 𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐬. All his creations are considered groundbreaking partially because he experimented with different techniques using oils, ones that had not been widely used before. This experimentation led to the masterpieces we know and love even today.
Are you ready to become legendary in your own right? Take the first steps to becoming a master of oil painting by attending our "Basics of Oil Painting" workshop. An all-day affair, you'll begin your journey into the history books here.
