Hall-Woodward Elementary School

Hall-Woodward Elementary School is a Pre-K through Fifth grade urban elementary school in the Winston Salem/Forsyth County School System.

Hall-Woodward Elementary School opened in 1978. It was named for Kathleen Hall and Julius Woodward. Miss Hall taught in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools for 33 years and was the first teacher to have a school named after her in WS/FCS. She taught for 57 years total. Many of her teaching years were at Gray High School, where Julius Woodward was principal for 24 years. If you attended Hall-Woodward Elementary School, we'd love to hear your stories!

On Thursday, February 8, a few of our scholars had the honor to attend the Governorโ€™s Advisory Council on Hispanic/Latino Affairs in Winston-Salem. This was the first time that the Governorโ€™s Council has ever met outside of Raleigh. They came to hear from our local leaders including the city council, the Winston-Salem Hispanic League, and citizens like you that want the government to enact laws and policies that will positively impact North Carolinaโ€™s Hispanic and Latino population. During this time students heard people advocating for better representation (how to support citizen of Hispanic/Latino background to run for office). Students heard a college student ask the council to advocate for legislation to support DACA locally in North Carolina. Students also learned about the importance of funding our public schools and how that money directly impacts their educational experience, through programs such as English as a Second Language classes and the Newcomer Centers.

Last but certainly not least, students learned that their voices matter. They can use their voice to make a lasting change in our world.

Although Governor Cooper was not present for this meeting, we were lucky to have met a former Jet, who had immigrated to the US when he was seven and he said he was lucky enough to call Hall-Woodward home.
