Good afternoon 8th grade parents, this is Dr. Crawford with important information regarding the 8th grade promotion ceremony. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will not be able to hold our promotion ceremony at Parkland High School as originally advertised. Therefore, the 8th grade promotion ceremony will take place at Flat Rock Middle School on Friday June 7, beginning promptly at 8:30 A.M.

Because Kimmel Farm is also having their 5th grade ceremony near the same time, we ask that you do NOT park on the Kimmel Farm Elementary School side of the campus.

We will have floor seating behind the students and overflow seating in the bleachers.

Please carpool so that we may reduce the number of vehicles that will be on campus that morning.

Finally, there will be a QR code on the program so that you may sign out your scholar and take them home immediately after the end of the ceremony.

We thank you for your flexibility and look forward to saying a final goodbye to our soon to be high school freshmen.

We love Ms. Bass!

Our Teacher of the Day for June 4 is Amber Bass from Flat Rock Middle School. Bass has been with the district for five years and serves as an EC teacher. Thank you for everything you do for our students!

Parents, be on the lookout for retest letters from your scholar. We had many scholars come within one or two points of a passing score on the EOG and they will have the opportunity to retake the EOG during the week of June 10. June 10th will be the official remediation day; and June 11th and 12th will be the retest days. All busses and bus routes will run normally on June 10th. Students that are going to retest MUST be at school on June 10. More information will be forthcoming.

Parkland High School Soccer Camp
Hello everyone,

My name is Dylan Collier, and I am the men’s and women’s varsity soccer coach for Parkland High School. I am so excited to reach out to you and bring you this exciting news!

We are hosting our first ever summer soccer camp for rising kindergarteners through rising 8th graders (for school year 24-25). This camp will be a 4-day camp from July 22-25th that will include instruction from the Parkland coaching staff and Parkland High School soccer athletes! We are looking to engage our community and build this Parkland program into family.

The camp will be capped at 100 participants to make sure everyone has ample time and attention from the coaches and players!

This will be an exciting time and it is only $50! That is half the price of other high school camps in the county!

Our goal is to facilitate quality training but make it affordable for everyone! Of course, we want to train players and grow their skill sets but the greater goal is to create a Parkland Soccer family. This is how we grow the sport and grow this South Winston community.

The link for the camp website will be attached to this email (down below). There is a registration link which will take you to a google form to complete for registration. There is also a payment link that will prompt you to pay for the camp.

Again, this will be such a fun and exciting time as we look to grow this community and the Parkland family!

If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to me through email at [email protected].

Dear 8th Grade Students and Families,

As we move into the last part of the school year it is important that we clarify and reinforce our expectations for the 8th grade promotion. We wanted to share the following information so that you can begin planning:

Behavior Requirements

Students need to make sure they are respectful during the promotion ceremony as they would any off campus field trip. Students must exhibit self control, follow directions, and respectful behavior towards teachers, students, and other staff during the promotion.

8th Grade Promotion Ceremony

The Promotion Ceremony will take place on June 7, 2024 at Parkland High School Auditorium. Families will be admitted to the ceremony area at 8:00am with the ceremony starting at 8:30am. Students need to arrive at school by 7:30am. Parents are not allowed to bring students to the promotion ceremony, students will be bussed over to the high school, for the purpose of attendance and breakfast. Failure to do so could result in your student not being able to participate in the promotion. Please keep in mind that there are multiple families celebrating. To ensure equitable seating, we are asking families to limit the number of people no more than 4 per family. Please refrain from saving seats. Parents will check out students through a QR Code provided the day of the promotion. Balloons are not permitted in the auditorium.

8th Grade Promotion Attire

Students shall adhere to their school’s dress code which includes, but may not be limited to, the following:

● Clothing should be clean and in good condition, free of holes, tears, or rips

● Collar/Polo shirts or blouses

● Dress pants/ Khakis

● No Hoodies/No Graphic Tees

● No backless or strapless tops are allowed unless you have a sweater to cover bare shoulders.

Fees and Invoices

All technology and book fines need to be paid in order for your child to participate. Invoices were sent home with report cards. If a student is bringing money to the media center to pay for past-due books, students must have the invoice with them. The updated invoices were printed on red paper. On behalf of the entire staff of Flat Rock Middle School, we look forward to seeing you at the Celebration of Promotion, and thank you for your partnership during your child’s middle school experience. Please contact us with any questions.

With school out for summer, we also recognize some families may have challenges to ensure there is enough to eat during the summer months. Included here is a link to information about the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services SUN Bucks program, which may provide much need relief to distressed families. Who Will Qualify to Receive SUN Bucks?

Some families will have to apply for the SUN Bucks program, but many students will automatically qualify for the program. Children will automatically qualify if they already participate in any of the following programs:

Free or Reduced-Price (FRP) meals at school because they have an approved FRP application at school, or
Food and Nutrition Services (FNS, food stamps), or
Work First (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), cash assistance), or
Medicaid with household income below 185% of the federal poverty level, or
Foster care.

Please click here to be taken directly to the NCDHHS Sun Bucks site. https://www.ncdhhs.gov/sunbucks

We are in need of test proctors. If you can donate some time the week of May 27-May 31 from 7:30 until approximately 1:00 please contact the front desk of the school or shoot Dr. Crawford ([email protected]) or Ms. Cleamons ([email protected]) an email. Your assistance during any of the testing days would be extremely beneficial.

Dear Parents/Guardians
It’s hard to believe this school year is coming to an end in just a few
more weeks! Which means it is time for End Of Grade Testing. In
preparation for the EOG’s, we would like to share the dates and important
information to help you and your child prepare for testing.
● Scholars' devices need to be at school everyday and charged. If your
student’s device is broken please have them return it to the school
as soon as possible. We will not have extra devices for students on
test dates.
● We will start our test at 8am! Please make sure your student is here by
7:30am. Late students will not be able to enter the test session. Please
be mindful that students tend to do better when they are prepared
and on time.
● Scholars will be asked to power down their phones and apple
watches. All phones, apple watches, airpods, and gaming devices will
be locked up in the teacher's classroom until testing is complete.
● There will be absolutely no check outs until after testing is
complete. Testing should be over by 11:45. Please plan appointments
accordingly.
