Providing gender-affirming mental health care 06/15/2023

Fantastic article by Mental Health America about the importance of providing gender-affirming care. It is critical that we as mental health providers are educated and up to date on how to support trans individuals in our care.

Providing gender-affirming mental health care Being transgender isnā€™t a mental health condition, but the trans community faces higher rates of mental health challenges than any other LGBTQ+ identity group. Beautiful views from both outside and inside!

01/06/2023

This beautiful artwork results from a happy collision of a client's hobbies and inspiration from one of the hospital's expressive groups. HBM offers expressive groups as a means for clients to access a variety of self-expressive tools and mediums: to use them to develop skills and coping tools for everyday life.

This particular group encouraged clients to do tactile art with chalk on a dark background to see things from a different perspective and create artwork that works well with this unconventional and seemingly tricky starting point.

From there, we might discuss types of scenes that are enhanced by a dark background and how that can mirror growth and progress through difficult life circumstances. We might discuss how chalk layers well and how the combination of the chalk and dark background can create a safe hiding place in hidden word or image art.

For one group member, however, that background was a reminder of a treasured hobby: Astrophotography.
