Mark Seuring Physiotherapy has been operating from The Cape Quarter (Greenpoint) since 2010. We are situated in a multi-disciplinary center called Sports Performance and Rehabilitation Center (SPARC). We are offering sports screenings in Jan-Feb. What does this mean?
One of our physios will take you through some sport-specific movement patterns, strength and mobility tests, answer questions and help you improve in your sport and hopefully keep you injury free. This will happen in a 20min session and you will be given some exercises and the next steps to a better balanced 2023.

Any activity (even walking or getting up from a chair) or sport has its own unique movement repertoire.
As physiotherapists, we isolate a few basic movements and look for restrictions, deficiencies or imbalances.
Then we extrapolate how these areas of weakness may contribute to injury or to decreased performance in your activity or sport.
We aim for the optimization of movement patterns and sequencing. This allows us to move more efficiently and most importantly, reduce the risk of injury due to system overload.
By finding the reasons that could be contributing to your problem, we focus on treating the system rather than just the source of your pain.

As physios, we always want to upskill ourselves.
We decided to do a course with Will Van Zyl from Ultimate Wellbeing.
Will is a Wim Hof teacher with a great understanding of the vagal nerve and polyvagal theory.
Our thinking was that a lot of our clients (including ourselves) are dealing with lots of anxiety and stress throughout our lives and especially post-COVID. These stresses and anxieties are actually limiting the healing potential on a physical level.
We're dealing with injuries, but often a client is dealing with lots of tension that they can't really control and they are therefore not in their ideal state to heal.
We wanted to plunge into it ourselves to see and experience first-hand how stresses and anxiety affect us and find ways to deal with them better. By learning new techniques we can now assist our clients in moving from their stressed, sympathetic state towards a state where the healing nervous system is accessed and actually allows for physical healing as well.
Here is what we experienced and learned.

A nice simple upper thoracic muscle stretch:
1. Slide your arms across your legs until you feel a stretch between your shoulder blades.
2. Relax your neck forward.
3. Hold 10 seconds
4. Now push your arms into your legs in a ‘scissors’ manoeuvre
5. Hold for another 10 seconds.
Then release and stretch down further or push your legs outward. Hold for 10.
Repeat 3 to 5 times
It is all about caring for your patients, intuition and being a good listener.

Life is about balance.
Our lives are very forward dominant.
Our torso and limbs rotating inward and towards the centre.
The muscles which pull our limbs and trunk backward ls and outwards are often weak and long.
To enhance our mobility, we need to lengthen and strengthen the short tight muscles and strengthen the long weak muscles.
