People spend approximately five hours every day looking at their phones — and that can lead to some serious text-neck aches and pains.
The human head weighs 10 pounds. For every inch your head is tilted forward, the weight your neck has to carry doubles. Over time, that extra strain adds up.

Here is our advice to prevent text neck from taking over:

1. Change how you hold your phone - bring the screen to eye level
2. Take phone breaks: at least 3 minutes every hour
3. If you experience prolonged pain, see a professional chiropractor
4. Do 10 min of yoga: Exaggerated nod, Downward-Facing Dog, Cat-Cow, Padahastasana or Bow Pose

Can A Chiropractor Help Improve Your Posture?

You should make changes to your lifestyle to accommodate the graph below, which shows which posture positions are better for your lower back discs.

Make sure that you adjust your seated position to roughly 120 degrees (i.e. leaning back) with feet on the ground in front of your knees. This will give your lower back discs the best chance to hydrate therefore minimising lower back tensions.

Wisdom Wednesday

When your body has those little niggles–you know, those little pains that don’t go away–that is your body whispering to you. That is your body’s red light saying “Something is amiss.”

What do you do with those whispers?

🌱I don’t have time to make an appointment with the doctor
🌱 I have too many things to do
🌱 It’s not really that painful
🌱 If I just tape it before I run it will be fine
🌱 And plus, I hate going to the doctor

Often you get away with not listening for a time. Maybe a long time. In fact, if you ignore the whispers long enough you stop even being able to hear them anymore. Until one day you have a bigger problem and your body screams. Listening to those whispers and getting things checked out early might just keep you from having to hear your body scream later.

Treat yourself as well as you treat your car, when red light coming up on your dashboard, and listen to the whispers.

It's easier to stay well than to get well. Don't wait until you're sick to seek out a healthier lifestyle.

Physical workers, or occupational athletes – whether they’re a nurse, police officer, fire-fighter or trades person, rely on their body functioning at 100% in order to do their job and provide a living for their families.

In our experience, they’re often the ones who visit us after putting up with a particular problem for years (if not decades) and it can end up being a problem that impacts their holidays and then their retirement due to the long-term damage.

How about we shift the focus of our healthcare to being proactive rather than reactive?

Tech Neck – An Unwanted Side Effect of Technology

Symptoms of Tech Neck
• Upper back and/or neck pain when using a handheld device
• Sharp pain in the neck or shoulders at night time
• General shoulder pain and tightness
• Headache (intermittent or constant), which is worsened when the head is bent down towards a computer or smartphone
• Numbness and tingling in the arms, hands, or fingers

How to Prevent Tech Neck
1. Posture
Be mindful of your posture. When using mobile phones, computers, or tablets, keep from hunching over or slouching forward.

2. Position Your Devices at Eye Level
Try standing workstation if possible.

3. Take Breaks & Stretch
Throughout your day, be sure to take periodic breaks from your devices. If it is hard to remember to stop what you’re doing, set calendar reminders at regular intervals. One of the most effective preventative measures you can take is to integrate a quick stretching routine

4. Low impact exercise
Exercises like Pilates and yoga can help your body counteract the effects of device usage. Many of the poses lengthen the front muscles of the neck, realign the shoulders, and free the lower cervical vertebrae.

5. Regular chiropractic care
Chiropractic care has been clinically proven to effectively prevent conditions like tech neck, as well as other painful conditions that impact the neck, spine and back. Regular chiropractic adjustments return your body to it’s natural state and help restore your optimal health.
