Happy Woman's Month😊
Just taking a moment to acknowledge some of the female physiotherapists who have shaped the profession:
1. Maggie Knott🤩
She developed the principles and techniques of the PNF approach during the 1940s. This approach was designed to improve movement patterns in patients with neurological impairments, but PNF techniques were later applied to patients with musculoskeletal injuries.
2. Florence Kendall 😊
She established the standard for musculoskeletal evaluation and treatment practice in physiotherapy.
3. Mary McMillan 🥳
She is considered the “founding mother” of physiotherapy as we know it. After returning from the UK to the US, she worked to rehabilitate World War I survivors. In 1918 she became the very first official reconstruction aide in the US, which eventually led to a leadership role in which she trained other women to become re-education therapists
There have been so many influential women in the field of physiotherapy, and there will continue to be many more in the future😁
Happy Friday everyone😆
Treatment for frozen shoulder:
Freezing phase - Pain relief should be the focus with gentle shoulder mobilisation, muscle release, acupuncture, dry needling and heat being the main treatment techniques
Frozen phase - End range mobilisations and other manual techniques are recommended. The goal is not only to restore joint range of movement, but also to stretch tight joint structures, and restore pain free motion to the joints
Thawing phase - Physiotherapy is most effective during this phase. Now including strengthening exercises to control and maintain increased range of movement is extremely important.
https://somersetwestphysio.co.za/
What are the stages of frozen shoulder🧐🧐???
Stage 1 – Freezing🥶: A slow onset of pain that can last from six weeks to nine months. As the pain worsens, the shoulder loses its ability to move easily
Stage 2 – Frozen❄️: There is a slow improvement in pain, but stiffness remains. This stage generally lasts four to nine months.
Stage 3 – Thawing ☔️: The movement in the shoulder slowly returns to normal over a five to 26 month period.

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a condition that limits movement in shoulder joint. Pain and stiffness comes on gradually, gets worse, and then finally goes away.
Your shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint: ⚽️⚽️⚽️
- upper arm (humerus)
- shoulder blade (scapula)
- collarbone (clavicle)
Strong connective tissue surrounding your shoulder joint holds everything together. This is called the shoulder capsule.
This capsule becomes thick and tight that it’s hard to move. Bands of scar tissue form and there’s less lubrication in the joint. These things limit your shoulder motion even more.
The condition is called “frozen” shoulder because as your shoulder gets more painful, you use it less. The less you use it, the thicker your shoulder capsule becomes, and the more difficult it is to use. So your shoulder feels “frozen” in place🥶🥶🥶

Experiencing neck pain? 😔
Consider coming to physiotherapy.
Physiotherapy for neck pain typically includes the following:
📌Reduce pain and stiffness
📌Improve head and neck range of motion
📌Develop dynamic strengthening of the neck and its supporting muscles
📌Develop strategies to prevent pain from recurring
Even if pain cannot be completely eliminated, physiotherapy is helpful in improving neck posture and function for daily movements🤩

Ergonomic sleeping positions😴
1. The ideal sleeping position promotes healthy spine alignment from your head to your hips.
2. Back or side sleeping is considered better than stomach sleeping.
3. Side sleeping may reduce heartburn and prevent back pain.
4. Sleeping on your back is best for neck pain and nasal congestion.
Most importantly, keeping your spine supported relieves pressure on the spine and enables your muscles to relax and recover😊
Exercise & Sleep💤💪
Sleep is defined as a reversible state where your responsiveness to external environmental stimuli is reduced.
Regular physical activity can improve your sleep quality in several ways:
1. It boosts the production of melatonin. This helps you fall asleep faster and enjoy better quality sleep.
2. Physical activity helps reduce stress levels
3. Engaging in physical activity improves your mood
4. It helps regulate body temperature, which is necessary for falling asleep. An increase in body temperature during exercise aids in the eventual drop 30-90 minutes post-exercises, facilitating easier sleepiness.
Engaging in regular physical activity can enhance the quality and duration of sleep😊
Did you know? 🧐Evidence shows that Pain and Sleep have a reciprocal, interdependent relationship.
Poor sleep can predict pain and even heighten the pain experience in certain conditions.
Pain during the day affects the following night's sleep quality, and poor sleep quality increases pain levels the following day, and the vicious cycle keeps repeating itself 🔁
How to improve your sleep?
1. Have a routine
2. Go to bed only when you're sleepy
3. Associate your bed with sleep and not other activities
4. Relaxation before sleeping
5. Have good sleep hygiene

It's important to take care of your mental health as well as your physical health🧠
1. Find ways to learn and be creative
2. Spend time in nature
3. Connect with others
4. Look after your physical health
5. Try to improve your sleep
Consider contacting a professional to assist you. You would contact a physiotherapist for your physical wellbeing, why would you not do the same for your mental wellbeing🩵
The 4 Pillars of Health😊
1. Nutrition - 5 servings a day of fruit and vegetables
2. Sleep - 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night
3. Stress - make sure to remove stress by mentally unwinding, taking 10 to 20 minutes a day to meditate
4. Movement - 30 minutes daily
The more we balance the four pillars within our lives, the better our chances of feeling good in the long run.
