Isibane se Afrika - The Light from Africa
“Isibane se Afrika” literally translates to mean “The Light From Africa” – a motto our choir really believes in and is at the heart of our art. Our mission is to be a force for good in our local township of Khayelitsha, to work with other people who want to do go, and to help build a positive future for the young people from our community.
The choir was started 18 years ago by Andisiwe Mbuje, and was born because Andisiwe really wanted to give young people from her township the opportunity to be part of something positive, have something they belong to and somewhere they can call home. "We are proud that we managed to do this and so much more without ever even having a proper rehearsal space, mostly we just practice in the cramped garage that belongs to my mom,” explains choir leader Andisiwe. Isibane se Afrika had the opportunity earlier this year to travel to Poland where we performed at the same glitzy gala event as UK electronic band Morcheeba - what an incredible achievement for a group from Khayelitsha!
Right now Isibane se Afrika is working very hard to raise funds for the Culture Hub we dream of building in Khayelitsha. This space will included a proper rehearsal space that is bigger than the garage we use at the moment, and will be a sanctuary for both choir members and the larger community. Our choir loves spreading our unique message of love, compassion and humanity, and enjoys performing at corporate events, weddings, year-end functions and festivals.
