This is a stark reality that demands our urgent attention. In his insightful opinion piece, Breadline Africa Chairman Khulekani Dlamini discusses how enhancing the quality—not just the accessibility—of Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes holds the key to unlocking a future where we fulfil our potential as individuals and as a nation.

Together, we can create a brighter tomorrow.

‘Reading this should make you sick’: The plight of thousands of schoolchildren still using pit toilets 12/07/2024

We urge you to read this sobering article covering the current state of school pit toilets in South Africa and what our learners face daily.

Breadline Africa is on a mission to change this, replacing dangerous school pit toilets with decent flushing toilet facilities.

We are incredibly grateful for the support we have received for our pit toilet replacement campaign, and for the thousands of learners whose dignity has been restored.

But much more is needed...

Photos from Breadline Africa's post 03/07/2024

It is wonderful to hear such positive feedback from the teachers and principals we have supported. We wanted to share these beautiful words from Principal Constance Mpanza of Siwelile Primary School in KwaZulu-Natal, whose dilapidated pit toilets were replaced with new flushing toilet facilities, thanks to the generous support of Old Mutual South Africa:

"On behalf of the entire staff, student and governing body here at Siwelile Primary School, I want to express our deepest gratitude to our sponsors today, Old Mutual and Breadline Africa. Thanks to your incredible generosity, our school has undergone a significant transformation.

For too long, our students had to make do with outdated and unsanitary toilet facilities. These new flushing toilets represent a major leap forward in terms of hygiene and dignity for everyone at our school.

This is especially important for our students, many of whom come from challenging backgrounds. We are a Quantile 3 school, and a significant number of our students come from child-headed households or families struggling with unemployment. Your investment in our school shows that you care about their well-being and their education.

We are truly happy and overwhelmed by your generosity. These new toilets will make a real difference in the lives of our students, and we are incredibly grateful for your support."
