Die Vreugde van Vandag
A Green School Glimpse - 12 September 2024
Just another day of growth at Green School SA, where we live and learn alongside nature every day. We plant seeds and concentrate in the classrooms, while the kitchen team works hard to prepare healthy meals. We are truly fortunate to learn and live in such a vibrant, natural environment.
Grandparents’ Day!
Ouma- en Oupadag!
Last Friday, our Kindy children welcomed their grandparents to our school—and where grandparents were not available, uncles, aunties, nannies, and neighbors filled in. It was a day to celebrate the joy of growing up in a loving and supportive community, showing how it takes a village to raise a child and recognizing the people who have a special impact on our little ones’ lives!
Koue wind buite, warm harte binne.
🌿 Thrift market! Our school community is absolutely loving the experience! It's amazing to see everyone come together to support sustainable living and give pre-loved clothes a second chance. 💚 Selling second-hand clothes has also proven to be a surprisingly great way for kids to earn some pocket money: one of our little ones is saving up for a dog and cleverly marked her outgrown clothes to boost sales. Such entrepreneurial spirit! 🐶👗
🌿 Tweedehandsde kleremark! (sulke lekker ondernemingsgees💚) 🐶👗
🌿 What an amazing day at our Thrift Market at Green School South Africa! 🌿
Our event was a massive success, thanks to our incredible community! A huge shoutout to Chanel for tirelessly receiving and sorting all the clothing donations. And special thanks to our volunteer parents, Nerina and Madeleen, for organizing and coordinating everything so smoothly. 👏
We were thrilled to have Monique from ThriftnChill and Lizette, owner of the newly opened shop Kleed. in Paarl, join us today. Your presence is adding so much value to our market! The turnout is fantastic, with a huge amount of clothes brought in and sold. It’s inspiring to see our community come together to support sustainable fashion and reduce waste. ♻️👕👗 Thank you to everyone who participated and made this day so memorable! Let's continue to champion sustainability and conscious consumerism! 🌱💚
🌿 Wat 'n wonderlike dag by ons Thrift Market by Green School South Africa! 🌿
Ons geleentheid was 'n groot sukses, danksy ons ongelooflike gemeenskap!

From September 2nd to 6th, 2024, Green School South Africa will observe Zero Waste Week with a focus on Fast Fashion. Fast Fashion refers to the rapid production of low-quality, trendy clothing that often ends up as waste. The fashion industry is a major contributor to environmental issues, including excessive water usage, textile waste, and carbon emissions. The industry is also criticized for poor working conditions. The week will highlight these issues and encourage more sustainable fashion choices.
Annabel shares her insights on fast fashion and reflects on her upcycling project from last year, which didn't quite go as planned! She learned that upcycling clothes can sometimes turn into a bit of a disaster, but thrifting offers a much simpler and more effective way to be sustainable. By choosing second-hand clothing, we can all play a part in reducing waste and supporting a circular economy. 🌿👗
🌸 Spring Day at Green School South Africa 🌼
Spring is tiptoeing onto our campus, and the Cape Floral Kingdom is getting ready to burst into a riot of color! Though the season is a bit behind, if you pause and look closely, you’ll spot the plants and busy little insects working their magic, cracking through the bark and brown leaves that winter left behind. 🐞 The sunlight feels warmer, the days are stretching longer, and we’re soaking up the energy to leap into one of the liveliest weeks at Green School South Africa! 🌞
Let’s celebrate the arrival of Spring together, where every new bloom is a reminder of nature’s gentle resilience and the wonder of living in tune with our world. 🌱
🌼Lentedag by Green School Suid-Afrika
🌧️ This winter has been one for the books, with record-breaking rainfall that’s transformed our campus into a unique outdoor classroom and muddy playground! The ground is completely saturated, creating small rivers, streams, and endless puddles that our learners have loved exploring. From jumping over flowing water to spotting tadpoles, the children have embraced the challenges brought by nature.
To manage the excess water, we've dug drainage lines, guiding it off the pavements and into our water management systems. The continuous rain has delayed crop planting, and moving around campus has become an adventure with makeshift bridges and muddy trails. But through it all, we’re learning to be adaptable, overcoming each challenge with resilience and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Our Grade 2 learners took their classroom learning to new heights! Watch how they experienced the beauty of Paarl Rock.
Our Grade 2 learners have been studying erosion and weathering in their Green Studies subject. This week, they took their learning to new heights—literally! The class went on an unforgettable outing to climb Paarl Rock and experience the breathtaking beauty of nature firsthand. It was an amazing way to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences. Check out the photos from their adventure! 🏞️
Hands-on learning!
Our High School learners are busy with a chicken project: the quest was to determine whether it will be to our advantage to have our own chickens, or to continue to buy eggs for our vegetarian kitchen.
The process included a financial viability study, exploring chicken coup or chicken tractor designs, considering the regulatory implications and veterinarian processes. So many aspects, and complexity of real life projects!
🌍👚 Fast Fashion: Starting a Circular Fashion Revolution!
We are taking on fast fashion with a thrifting event for our whole community during Zero Waste Week. Everyone can bring in their pre-loved, or sometimes hardly worn clothes to sell or exchange. Together, we’re reducing pollution and promoting sustainability.
Why thrift? The fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters. Only 1% of clothing is recycled; the rest ends up in dumps, polluting water and emitting CO2. But buying second-hand helps reduce your fashion footprint.
Where to thrift?
In-person stores: Ons Winkel, SPCA, Hospice, Chic Mamas, Daddy Cool.
Online apps: Yaga, Thrift Happens, Drip Markets, Wisi-Oi, Thrifty Ways, Love it Again.
Join us in this event! Every piece of clothing finds a new home and a new story. Let’s make fashion circular and do our part for the planet! 🌱👗
🌍👚 Vinnige Mode: Begin ’n Mode Revolusie!
Fisikiese winkels: Ons Winkel, SPCA, Hospice, Chic Mamas, Daddy Cool.
Aanlyn winkels: Yaga, Thrift Happens, Drip Markets, Wisi-Oi, Thrifty Ways, Love it Again.
🌊 Ocean Conservation Camp
As part of Green Studies, our high school learners had the privilege this weekend to join students from Stellenbosch University on a marine conservation camp. The experience was filled with excitement and learning, including activities like shark cage diving, a boat safari to see the Marine Big 5 of Gansbaai, a behind-the-scenes tour at Grootbos Conservation Centre to learn about their current research, and a visit to the South African Penguin Sanctuary. The university students and Green School learners had the opportunity to learn a lot from each other, deepening their knowledge about sustainability and marine conservation. 🦈🌱
🌊 Oseaanbewarings Kamp

Celri Olley – 21/02/1976 – 15/08/2024
Last night we lost a beloved colleague, friend, naturalist and educational visionary. We mourn the loss of an inspiring woman and celebrate her life with gratitude.
Celri loved the ocean. Today our school bids farewell to this beautiful, dynamic soul by decorating the windows with images of the ocean and sea creatures.
We had the privilege of stepping back in time at Soetmelksvlei, farmlife beautifully preserved by Babylonstoren. Our students caught a glimpse into a time capsule of life before screens and plastic—a simple, sustainable way of living. 🌾
Last week, our Grade 1 and 3 students visited Soetmelksvlei for a hands-on learning experience! They rode in an ox wagon, churned butter, and watched a wheat mill powered by water. Our students even made their own roosterkoek (stick-bread)!
Soetmelksvlei is a restored 19th-century farm that offers a unique opportunity to engage with and learn about traditional artisan skills and life on a farm. We are so grateful to have such a wonderful place that preserves our heritage and allows our children to experience it firsthand. It was an unforgettable experience for everyone!🌾🧈🚜
We celebrate wonder women who co-create an ecosystem in which children and adults alike can flourish.
Cooking and baking is a hugely popular activity at our school - but really, it is a medium for teaching a wide range of skills in an engaging, hands-on, real-world way!
This week our Grade 5’s explored maths and science with such joy! Have a look:
Loer bietjie:

Learning in WONDER about NATURE by starting our winter days sitting on the top of the jungle gym and watching the SUNRISE...
What a place to go to school!!!
Green School’s purpose is to educate for sustainability through community-integrated, entrepreneurial learning, immersed in a natural environment...
..and this is IMMERSION!
Look at that expansiveness and natural beauty! These Grade 1 children see it, feel it and bathe in it. They feel at home in the NATURAL WORLD; it feeds them information about the world they live in, and it impacts them deeply in profound ways.
If we are to THRIVE as humans on our planet, then the natural world needs to be thriving to; the relationship we share with the Earth needs to be SUSTAINABLE.
We believe that we must prepare the youth of today to deal the challenges of a changing world. A world that faces different challenges compared to previous generations. We cannot educate our children to succeed in our past; we must EDUCATE THEM FOR THEIR FUTURE and for the future of our planet. A new model of education is not only possible but necessary. This will require a completely different mindset and set of skills and these are at the heart of a Green School education.
