No matter who you are or where you may live in this ever-shrinking world, almost everyone seems to be affected by coronavirus (COVID-19).
As the days progress, the number of people impacted is increasing at an alarming rate with entire cities and countries under quarantine.
COVID-19 is a new test of our collective strength.

Businesses and industries all around have implemented certain changes in order to stay afloat in these trying times and remote working has been their one-stop solution for the time being.
Success at work just became much harder to define. Now that many of us are working from home due to the worldwide pandemic, the employees working at a company are not in close proximity. They all perform different tasks with varying levels of complexity. And, while we can look and sound our best on an online chat or web-based meeting with everyone up on the screen, it’s hard to know what someone is feeling and doing off-screen.

That’s why every company needs to start re-thinking how they measure the performance, efficiency and wellness of a remote team. It’s a different world.
There is normally one person in every team that talks the loudest and have the most energy, however they can now not overshadow the quiet members of the team anymore. It is also very difficult to truly determine the emotional wellness of a team member from a distance and over a technology platform.
As mentioned already, success is more than checking off boxes. It’s too easy to measure employee engagement that way when everyone is remote. Yet, success is more than what the worker completes during the day. There are many other factors including engagement, sentiment, teamwork, and overall morale. Success is now harder to define because merely focusing on what the employees produce is not going to give you a clear enough picture. Instead, it’s better to focus on overall well-being and wellness.

For example, any company that shifts their thinking to encouraging employee welfare will find that the entire business improves -- not just financially but in terms of whether it is a great place to work and what your customers think. Teamwork also improves because employees that feel secure, healthy, and mindful about their colleagues tend to work harder and smarter.
Here’s the most important reminder of all. Success is not a number. The one thing the pandemic has reminded us about is that we can’t measure success on a spreadsheet.

"Determine what’s essential to survival of your business. It’s about sharpening your focus. Build a taxonomy of what is critical, and invest disproportionately in those areas. Be more selective about who it is you’re training.

Companies focus their training efforts in areas critical to infrastructure and the jobs that have the most impact on corporate revenue. Starbucks is a good example of this, after closing 100 stores and eliminating 600 jobs, Starbucks temporarily closed 7,100 of its coffee houses for three hours to retrain the baristas who serve their customers.

Cut back creatively. Training experts have discovered ways to trim expenditures while keeping the core intact – if at a reduced level. Among their suggestions are:

1. Cut travel costs: airfares, lodging and meals for dozens of employees for a week of training can be prohibitive. Instead bring one trainer to the employees!

2. Piggyback training: we’re seeing companies trying to package training with what they’re already doing, if they have a half day regional meeting coming up, they might do training at the same time!

3. Shift schedules to minimise the impact on working hours: When the economy is good, you don’t get uptight about taking an hour in the middle of the week for training! Now you want to be doing billable work, during prime working hours. Shift your training to early mornings, lunch breaks and late evenings. The company pays employees for one hour and asks them to give one hour of personal time for training.

4. Eliminate catering: Trainers often joke that employees come to training for free food. Catering can be an unnecessary cost, however. Introduce the brown-bag! You can save up to R200 000,00 a year just on catering costs!

5. Maximise employee knowledge: “Mentoring, coaching and shadowing will all likely become more important during the downturn, predicts Michael Grohs, research analyst for the Institute of Corporate Productivity. It is also important because of the upcoming Baby Boomer retirements, for which many companies are not properly preparing. Mentoring can be critical to easing through that transition.” Interpersonal skills, communication and conflict handling are all necessary skills that are critical to your business success. Get them ready now!
