What a productive weekend for Fruit Share Adelaide! We're thrilled to share our latest harvests:
Saturday: 116kg of lemons in Heathfield
Sunday: 117kg of lemons + 107kg of grapefruit in Dover Gardens
A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers:

And of course, our generous homeowners!
Special thanks to Rose in Heathfield and Amy in Dover Gardens for not only letting us pick their fruit but also lending a hand with the harvest! π
This bounty will help feed those in need who might not otherwise have access to fresh fruit. π
Fun fact: We had some feathered spectators in Dover Gardens β a couple of chickens watched us work, eagerly waiting for their turn to roam the garden!
π¦ Nature reminder: We spotted bird nests in Dover Gardens. Remember to be extra careful around nests, even if they appear empty. We discovered some were home to some tiny baby birds! Bonus points to anyone who knows what type of bird they are.

πππ Where Does Fruit Share Adelaide Get All That Fruit? πππ
You've heard about our 8,500kg harvest, but ever wondered where it all comes from? Here's the breakdown:
1οΈβ£ Backyard Bonanza: Nearly half our haul (4,190kg) comes from ordinary backyards across Adelaide! On average, we collect 66kg per backyard, but we've hit jackpots of over 200kg at times. These harvests are our most frequent and truly show the abundance in our suburban orchards.
2οΈβ£ Orchard Goldmines: A whopping 4,110kg has come from just a handful of harvests at local orchards like Magareys and Lennane. Our average orchard haul? An impressive 225kg! Our record is a staggering 900kg of apples in one go.
3οΈβ£ Pre-Picked Parcels: 235kg has come from generous folks who picked their own fruit for us to collect. While it's our smallest category, averaging 12kg per collection, it's a testament to our community's eagerness to contribute.
We're always looking for more fruit sources:
β
Got a laden backyard tree?
β
Run an orchard with surplus fruit?
β
Happy to pick and donate yourself?

We're on the lookout for fruit trees to pick across Adelaide!
Fruit Share Adelaide has harvested over 8,500 kg of fruit so far in 2024, but we're still looking for more fruit trees for our volunteers to harvest across the city. All the fruit we harvest is donated to those in need who may not otherwise have access to fresh fruit.
π Where we need more trees:
β
East and West Adelaide
β
Areas closer to the city
β
Adelaide Hills (we love visiting these beautiful gardens!)
π Thanks to support from the City of Mitcham and the City of Onkaparinga, we've had great harvests in the south, particularly in Onkaparinga.
π Northern Suburbs: We hope to resume picking there once fruit fly restrictions ease (fingers crossed for early December).
π³ Calling all orchard owners! If you have fruit that isn't worth commercial picking but is still edible (often better than store-bought!), we'd love to harvest it under your direction.

What a lemon-tastic harvest! ππ
Yesterday afternoon, our team descended upon Flagstaff Hill for an incredible lemon-picking session. The results? A whopping 120kg of juicy lemons harvested from a single tree! Best of all, these lemons will be going to help feed those in need in our community.
Highlights:
π Some of the best views in Adelaide, overlooking Sturt Gorge and Flinders University
π Massive lemons - our biggest weighed in at 500g (that's 5x the size of a standard lemon!)
π First use of our new platform scales for easier fruit weighing
A huge shoutout to our amazing volunteers Brett and Jodie, and a special thanks to Susan, the generous homeowner who not only allowed us to pick her lemons but also joined in the harvest fun!
This picking session was quite the workout - the tree hadn't been pruned in 3 years, so we had to do some serious trimming to reach all those lovely lemons.
