How do you say and write Questions?

I have a friend who sometimes makes this mistake...

He writes (or speaks) a sentence and then simply adds the question mark. This is not correct.

To ask a question, you need to SWAP around the first 2 or 3 words:

E. G
IS BOB going to the store? from BOB is going to the store.

Is he...? not He is...
Is that...?" not That is...

I hope this helps you understand our crazy English language!

Please feel free to write me a message for assistance with your English. I am always happy to help 💜

TEACH YOURSELF ENGLISH SPELLING (POST NUMBER 3)

Hi everyone,

This is quite a long post! I'm sorry.

In my first 2 posts, here in Jill's SchoolHouse, you met our student, Fred, along with our well-meaning tutor, Mary, and her student, Jana. (See below for my first 2 posts on English spelling.)

You may recall:
Fred was looking up ARCHITECT under the letter R in the English dictionary...and why shouldn't he??

Mary was busy trying to get her student, Jana, to write the English word TUESDAY by getting her to listen carefully while she pronounced it correctly..."CHOOZDAY… CHOO.., CHOO…, CHOO…, CHOOZDAY”.

Fred, Mary and Jana were all doing something VERY WRONG.

What was that???

I will tell you below.

Not only were they doing something very wrong, if they kept on doing it, they would NEVER, EVER learn to spell in English!!!

They would learn a little bit but not enough to become GOOD ENGLISH SPELLERS.

So...

What were Fred, Mary and Jane doing wrong?

They were making 2 crucial mistakes that nearly ALL people who are teaching or learning the English language make.

MISTAKE NUMBER ONE
1. Fred, and others similar to him, mistakenly believed that, by learning the NAMES of the letters used in ENGLISH, that this would help him to become a GOOD ENGLISH SPELLER.

Fred was wrong. 😯😡😟

"Like" and "Follow" my page, Jill's Schoolhouse, to learn more. 😊

------------------------------------------------------------

P.S: In my next post, I will share MISTAKE NUMBER 2.

Then I will tell you WHY Fred, Mary and Jana were all wrong....and WHAT YOU CAN DO INSTEAD to ensure that you BECOME A GOOD ENGLISH SPELLER.

Thank you for reading! ☺

See you soon!

TEACHING SPELLING POST 2

Hi everyone,

In my first post, you met Fred, who was looking up ARCHITECT under the letter R in the English dictionary.

Today we meet well-meaning English tutor, Mary.
Mary is busy trying to get her student, Jana, to write the English word TUESDAY.

Jana is holding her pen nervously over her paper, straining her brain to think…
Mary says “Now listen carefully Jana. Write CHOOZDAY…CHOO.., CHOO…, CHOO…, CHOOZDAY”

Jana quits and goes home. I would too.

LESSON NUMBER ONE

Sometimes (often!) English words are not written the way they sound.

The ONLY way to know how to spell an English word is to:
1. have seen it written down, and
2. have committed it to your memory.

But how do I do this????
Does this mean that I have to see every single English word that I want to write down?

The simple, but sad, answer is YES.

And how do I commit them all to my memory?

There is a simple way and I am about to share it with you.

My following posts will explain the simplest, easiest, quickest way to learn and understand English spelling. In a very short time, you will be on your way to becoming a proficient speller of the English language.

Follow me now to share in all my secrets...

TEACHING SPELLING

We don't teach spelling, we teach SPELLERS.

Spellers need to be taught the CODE of English.
Think about it this way:
In the musical world, where 'dots on lines' can be read as, for instance a, b, b, c, a, b, b...we know that these symbols represent SOUNDS which we can hum and which, when hummed together, make a tune. Some people (not me!) can even "hear the sounds playing" in their head.

Of course, only people who have been TAUGHT the CODE can translate the written symbols into the SOUNDS THEY REPRESENT.

Singers would sound pretty funny singing "a, b, b, c, a, b, b". 😄

In the same way, the letters that we write along a page also represent sounds - the sounds of the English language.

For instance, the letter R says rrrrr...the first sound in the word rabbit, or run, or really really relevant...but NOT the first sound in the word ARCHITECT.

One of my students, let's call him Fred, was looking up ARCHITECT in the dictionary under R. And why not?

Fred hadn't been taught THE CODE of English.

And Fred was 45 years old.

Teach them the CODE.

Think about it....and share what you know.

[PS: This is my first post. If it has made you think, then please let me know or share. If I get even one "like", I'll write more. I'm like that 😄 ]
