It’s actually how we have learned to cope that causes us to suffer. Then we develop ways of coping with that suffering, which causes us to suffer even more and so on. The problem is we don’t consciously choose those ways of coping, however we can consciously change them.
The reactive mind
The reactive mind is the part of us that causes stress, depression and anxiety etc..,
The reactive mind gets triggered by events that are in some way similar to or associated with past trauma. When the reactive mind becomes activated, the thoughts arise non-volitionally, meaning we don’t consciously think those thoughts, they occur automatically, without our conscious choice or control.
The way life is interpreted by the reactive mind is influenced by subconscious underlying negative beliefs, which distort our perception of reality. Those underlying subconscious beliefs were generated by conclusions and attributions made in the past, usually during childhood, in relation to negative or traumatic experiences and events that occurred during that time. Those underlying beliefs are by nature, very rigid and dogmatic, so the way this part of the mind reasons is superstitious. In this way the reactive mind holds ideas in a rigid and dogmatic way with a tendency to solely look for evidence that supports those belief, ignoring anything that is inconsistent with what is believed. The reactive has those underlying beliefs justified with flimsy evidence, however, great credit is attributed to such. Not surprisingly the reactive self sees what it’s looking for, so the subconscious underlying intention is to be right, rather than see the truth. Interestingly, the more radicalised and extreme people’s views become, the less scientific and the more superstitious their thinking becomes. This is reflected in the hard left and right of politics, which gets further polarised through the likes of Facebook which uses artificial intelligence algorithms specifically designed to radicalise people, to carefully direct what content appears on their feed (evidenced based claim).
The reactive mind can’t cope with uncertainty, because uncertainty equals potential danger. So it clings to beliefs, interpretations, opinions, conclusions, assumptions and subjective meaning to a point of treating them like some sort of quasi truth. Facts and the reactive mind’s interpretation of the facts become collapsed together. The result is our perception of life becomes very distorted. Consequently we don’t get life! Instead we get the reactive mind’s subjective interpretation of life, which is perceived by the individual as being the objective facts. The reactive self is in a perpetual state of being affected. There is no cure and it will never get better and every attempt to do so will merely add to the problem and cause us to become further locked into and consumed by the reactive mind. In fact, it is actually the reactive mind that tries to fix or escape itself.
Instead, the solution is to access the choice of where our attention is directed, or where we are sitting within ourself. To gain freedom from, as apposed to escaping or resisting. We need to somehow find a way of unlocking our consciousness from the stronghold of the reactive mind and to somehow find a way of accessing our true self. So the goal is to find our conscious self again, the part of ourselves that has conscious, volitional intention and choice. To simply find the truth or at least see things more accurately. To be aware of what is really happening within us, rather than arguing with a distorted version of the truth.
A bit of poetry I found recently that I wrote about ten years ago when I was going through an extremely rough time. It’s amazing what life draws out of us when the chips are down:
The river of life
I see it this way: there is an underlying river of life, like a blueprint of our souls journey or you could say fate itself. And if we can surrender to the flow of this river and access the guidance that life gives us, rather than listening to the minds expectations of what should or shouldn't be, our life then flows in accordance with that of the soul. The wisdom of the river is beyond that that the mind can understand or accept, so really to let go and flow with the river requires us to become who we are beyond the programming and conditioning of the mind. This is the state of the heart itself, pure love, acceptance, surrender. Then the river takes you... and the river takes you around the rocks. We only hit the rocks when we resist the flow of the river and try to swim against the flow out of fear and lack of trust in life itself. This is not to say that the river doesn't twist and turn in directions we often don't want to accept.

“Responsibility begins with the willingness to take the stand that one is cause in the matter of one’s life. It is a declaration not an assertion, that is, it is a context from which one chooses to live. Responsibility is not burden, fault, praise, blame, credit, shame or guilt. In responsibility, there is no evaluation of good or bad, right or wrong. There is simply what’s so, and the stand you choose to take on what’s so. Being responsible starts with the willingness to deal with a situation from the view of life that you are the generator of what you do, what you have and what you are. That is not the truth. It is a place to stand. No one can make you responsible, nor can you impose responsibility on another. It is a grace you give yourself – an empowering context that leaves you with a say in the matter of life.”

Why Most of Us Will Never Win Arguments Facts and accusations won't win anyone over. This might.
And most of all don’t create an identity around it.
As we look back onto our past actions, behaviors and attitudes, we may have regrets. We may wish we had done things differently, spoken up more, taken a stronger stand. And as we venture forward learning and growing, we also are likely to make mistakes and missteps along the way. This is a good reminder that mistakes are part of being human and forgiving ourselves as we are learning is an important act of self-love.

With every crisis comes the opportunity to grow in ways not normally possible. When tragedy strikes we come to a crossroad, faced with the reality that our ordinary usual self simply won’t cut it. Life forces us to break free from the comfort, and limitations of our conditioned self. We anxiously stumble forward into the uncertainty of our conscious self. Here there is no foundation, no past to draw from, no certainty, just being, and meeting reality, right here, right now. We feel strangely perplexed as we dislodge from our conceptual identity, the story we have known ourselves to be for so long, but strangely we don’t feel depressed or all that anxious, instead there is a certain feeling of aliveness, an invigoration that coincides with new clarity and perspective. Choices and possibilities emerge that simply were just not going to happen before. We finally find ourself able to move forward in ways that were not possible before.

Anxiety
People are generally unaware that they have anxiety until it becomes completely unmanageable. Usually, by the time they come to me asking for help, the horse has already well and truly bolted, at which point they want a quick and simple solution to immediately stop the anxiety all together. The real problem is, in most cases, they have been totally unaware of the build up and generally report the anxiety to have happened sudden and unexpectedly. The reason that people are not aware of anxiety until it almost reaches the level of a panic is because, in most cases, they had already been generally quite anxious for some time before it got to that point but didn’t realise they were. The thing to understand about anxiety is, it is the opposite of mindfulness. When we are anxious we lose awareness and awareness is what mindfulness is really about. When we are anxious our attention gets consumed and hijacked and like a computer with too many windows open, there are very few resources left over to be mindful of what is going on and what has been building up. The key to dealing with anxiety is to develop mindfulness, so we can develop awareness of anxiety at the early stages. To do this we need to practice the principals of mindfulness but it’s important to know, the practice of Mindfulness isn’t about meditating. The purpose of meditation is simply to help us take what we have learned from that experience into our day to day living. It’s the level to which we can mindfully apply mindfulness throughout our moment by moment day that really matters. The reason Mindfulness is so effective is because ultimately it is an alternative to our default way of dealing with anxiety, which not only doesn’t work but makes anxiety worse. Without really being aware of it our default is to compulsively wrestle with anxiety. We desperately try in vain to stop it, to fix it, to avoid it, or try to work out why we are experiencing it etc. etc.. all of which only serves to add to the problem. Every attempted solution becomes an additional problem, we literally try to think our way out of over thinking, which is the equivalent of punching more and more buttons on the computer when it freezes due to having too many windows open. Mindfulness on the other hand is the same as stopping, waiting and allowing the windows to slowly close down in their own time. Being mindful of anxiety at the initial stages is the key. It allows us the choice to gently let go of it by redirecting our attention away from the inner world of thought and fears, to the real physical world we are in right here, right now. That may mean connecting with your body. It may mean connecting with your environment or it may mean connecting with people on a heart level. Either way you are bringing your attention out of the inner world of fantasy and thoughts to the outer world of reality
