Did you know that children who have someone read to them every day when they are very young learn to speak, read and write more easily?

If you care for a little one try this easy activity during your next reading session:

Let them choose the book 📖

Whenever there’s a chance to read, give your baby or toddler a choice of a few books. You’ll quickly find out which ones excite them and which ones don’t!

CESA is a proud and active taskforce member of the Words Grow Mind’s campaign.

All are welcome to come along and read a book or two with your baby, toddler or preschooler at our supported playgroup programs. To find a local supported playgroup visit: https://www.cesa.catholic.edu.au/our-schools/school-directory

Congratulations to Jayne Shortt from St Patrick's Technical College for receiving the VET Coordinator of the Year Award at the Motor Trade Association of SA/NT Awards Ceremony last week.

Each year thousands of Catholic school students gain employability skills and get a head start in their careers by undertaking Nationally Accredited Vocational and Educational Training (VET) during Year 10, 11 or 12 as part of their SACE studies.

VET Coordinators have an important role in connecting and supporting students to study VET courses whilst at school. The skills and knowledge of work that students develop through VET stand them in good stead for the future, no matter what pathway beyond school they choose to pursue.

Welcome to the inaugural International Day of Play!

Starting today the United Nations General Assembly has declared that June 11 will, annually, be International Day of Play.

🌏 A global survey of more than 10,000 children found that 97% believe that play is important, but 65% would like to play more.

🏃 Children listed running around or playing sport as their top playtime activity, followed by building or creating something and then making up their own game. 🎭

🙋Today is a reminder of the power of play and the experiences of joy and wonder it provides in children’s lives. It is through play that children can truly be themselves as there is no judgement and it allows children to imagine a world filled with endless possibilities.

👁️ When children play they experience the world through different lenses as it ignites curiosity and wonder about the world they live in.

👐Play provides opportunities for connections with others, gives children agency and has many benefits including brain development and social and emotional wellbeing.

Many Catholic schools have engaged in World Environment Day, which took place yesterday. It's a day to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment and an opportunity to teach students that together all the small changes can make a difference.

We love the different ways that schools have chosen to mark the day:

Students at Nazareth Catholic Community have produced some stunning artwork by recycling old books
St Anthonys School Edwardstown visited Cleland Wildlife Park and immersed in the wonders of the natural world
Caritas College, St Francis of Assisi College, Renmark and Loreto College, Marryatville, SA combined World Environment Day with the annual Vinnies Winter Appeal fundraiser
and St Joseph's School Barmera did a litter pick up around their school

National Reconciliation Week (May 27 - June 3) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

This year’s theme for National Reconciliation week is Now More Than Ever and is a reminder to us all that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will —and must —continue.

There have been many moments in Australia’s reconciliation journey that make us want to turn away. But when things are divisive, the worst thing we can do is disengage or disconnect.

On National Sorry Day, we pay our respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia. We remember and acknowledge the grief, suffering and injustice experienced by the Stolen Generations, their families and communities and the intergenerational impacts of the mistreatment still felt today.

Not just today – but every day – is a chance for all Australians to work together to fight racism wherever it lurks and share the steps towards healing.

🙏 This week is National Volunteer Week and a time to recognise and thank all of the hundreds of special volunteers within our school communities, who give so generously.

💙 Kayla has been instrumental in creating an extracurricular program to educate and entertain students out-of-hours, as well as managing the second hand uniform shop and co-chairing the P&F committee!
