As part of Ninti’s commitment to promoting reconciliation, we asked staff across the country about their Ninti work and what reconciliation means to them.
Finishing our second month, our Senior Project Officer, National Best Practice Unit Tackling Indigenous Smoking, Maxine!
Reconciliation Australia
National NAIDOC

Hi, my name is Maxine. My cultural affiliation is Adnyamathanha/Antakarinya, I work from Kaurna Country.

What do you like best about working at Ninti?
I like the fact that Ninti One is an Aboriginal organisation and takes its work with community seriously and respectfully. It's an opportunity for me to share my generational knowledge about the land and environments and my cultural knowledge which can offer new perspectives to the projects that Ninti One undertakes.

What does reconciliation mean to you?
History has taught us that without reconciliation there will always be anger and hate. A better future is made so by understanding the mistakes of the past, and working to ensure they are not repeated.

How does Ninti support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff?
Everyday culture is bought into the conversation and as an Aboriginal woman my thoughts and advice is valued by the organisation.

How do you keep your connection to Country strong?
I return to Country as often as I can. I am reminded on all that my mothers and fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers have taught me and I have instilled those teachings into the lives of my children and my grandchildren.

Hi, my name is Scott, I work at Ninti One as the Marketing & Communications Manager. I work from Kaurna Country.

What do you like best about working at Ninti?
My Ninti One work provides an opportunity to witness how supporting self-determination leads to successful community outcomes. I am privileged to play a small part in genuine, constructive results and opportunities.

What does reconciliation mean to you?
Reconciliation requires acknowledging our country’s colonial history and actively supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in creating positive change. Non-Indigenous allies play an important role in partnering on action and amplifying the message.

Hi, my name is Mel, I work at Ninti One as a Program Support Officer for the National Best Practice Unit Tackling Indigenous Smoking. My cultural affiliation is Kuyani Adnyamathanha, I work from Peramangk Country.

What do you like best about working at Ninti?
The staff are friendly, supportive and welcoming; flexibility for work/life balance and working with people from all over Australia who hold a diverse and incredible wealth of knowledge and experience.

What does reconciliation mean to you?
Promoting and celebrating our culture and extensive ancient knowledge, integrating this into mainstream business, education and recreation. Reconciliation is about non-Indigenous people accepting the history of this land, truth telling and genuine collaboration and consultation with Indigenous people. It is also a commitment from non-Aboriginal /Torres Strait Islander community members to create a united future, valuing all perspectives.

How do you keep your connection to Country strong?
I don’t live close to my Country so I like to follow news and media from the Flinders Ranges, always feeling comforted by images of that beautiful land. I spend a lot of time with my family walking and exploring the creeks and bush near where I live, building connections with the area surrounding my home.
