Wine of the Week: Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2022

The latest vintage from one of Australia's most iconic wineries (if not the most iconic) has arrived at Wineology!

First released in 1960, Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz has become one of the most loved wines in the country. It is affectionately known as "Baby Grange," in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. It combines the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz, creating a balanced and complex wine.

The 2022 vintage – 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz – offers a vibrant bouquet of dark fruits, cassis, and plum, complemented by hints of spice and oak. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a lingering finish. Bin 389 is matured in American oak, imparting a subtle vanilla character that enhances its complexity.

As our Wine of the Week, it is 10% off until Wednesday by the bottle online or in-venue.

We have been keenly watching Granite Belt rockstars La Petite Mort as their reputation for innovative and unconventional winemaking gathers momentum.

In their excellent book "How to Drink Australian", Jane Lopes and Jonathan Ross write that "the [Granite Belt] is bustling ... the area is one to watch in the Australian wine industry."

The La Petite Mort Nebbiolo Rosé 2021 is a striking example of the winery's creativity and commitment to quality. This wine showcases the lighter side of Nebbiolo, but the heavier side of rosé. It's often referred to as a “Baby Red” with delicate notes of red berries, rose petals, and a hint of spice.

This week, as our Wine of the Week, it's 10% off by the bottle both online and in venue. We also have it available by the glass for you to taste along with some tapas – may we recommend the chicken liver pâté with nashi marmalade? Or the charred chorizo with honey, ricotta and pistachio crumb?

Wine of the Week: La Rioja Alta Viña Alberdi Reserva 2019

Most likely Spain's most famous region, Rioja primarily produces Tempranillo, a grape celebrated for its versatility and remarkable ageing potential. It produces reds known for their savoury, almost dusty flavours.

recently named La Rioja Alta as one of the world's most admired wine brands.

The 2019 vintage stood out for its balance, attractive freshness and round, silky tannins. The palate is round, with lively freshness at the start and supple tannins that lead to a long, fruity and balsamic finish.

The dusty tannins of Rioja need something tender and fatty, which is why it's also our go-to for a high-brow/low-brow pizza party 🍕

Or keep it a bit more localised with a chorizo dish, especially our own charred chorizo with rosemary thyme-infused honey, ricotta and pistachio crumb. Come in and give it a try!

Wine of the Week: Primosic Ribolla Gialla Riserva 2019 🧡

Ribolla Gialla is typically light in body with bright acidity... but when it's left on its skins, as it is here, it turns into something that's a whole new category.

This is an incredible, full-body orange wine. It spends four weeks on its skins, aged in barrels for at least a year, and then aged further in bottles "until the right balance skin-wine is reached" (whenever that may be – so wonderfully Italian!).

Characteristically dry, the fragrance evokes apricot, green tea, bitter orange rind, candied tangerine, and dried fruit.

Literally neighbours with cult producers Gravner and Radikon, Primosic's Riserva is a chance to drink extraordinary Oslavian orange wine for less. We have it in the machines currently to try by the glass, or grab it for 10% off by the bottle this week only.

While in Italy recently, .gilbeylane visited Primosic and tried his personal favourite varietal in its native homeland: Ribolla Gialla.

Primosic is now available at Wineology, and we thought you'd enjoy these behind-the-scenes photos to celebrate this launch!

The 2018 Zinfandel is distinguished by its laser-focused acidity, which intertwines with notes of strawberry, sweet baking spices, dried cherry, and earthy undertones.

Wine of the Week: La Ferme de Sato “Schisteux” Chenin Blanc

Nestled in the heart of Central Otago, Sato is renowned for its exceptional organic wines. At the forefront is Yoshiaki and Kyoko Sato, a winemaker couple whose journey from Japan to New Zealand embodies a blend of dedication and passion.

When we interviewed the couple for our latest blog post, they told us about this parcel of Chenin and why it leads to such a unique wine:

'Block 2 has the most schist rocks in our vineyard. This is one of the big reasons we chose this block for Chenin, as we believe schist gives the perfect flavour and taste to the grapes.

'Indeed, we think of our Chenin Blanc as “made from schist” (schisteux).'
