👗 Our outfit of the day is Ambassador Melissa’s in Far North Queensland – where ☀️ summer dresses ☀️ don’t have to hide at the back of the wardrobe for a whole season. 😎

Originally from Canada, Melissa was used to below 0-degree ❄️ winters but in FNQ she’s experienced a whole new kind of season. 🌴🌊🌊

‘I love defying winter norms in FNQ: sunscreen on, jumper off!’ she said.

‘In Canada, we had internal heaters on 24/7 in winter and I never left home without a scarf, hat, jacket and boots. Queensland winter is much milder where I may only need a jacket for a few weeks. 🧥

The mild, pleasant weather makes it my favourite season for camping 🏕️ and adventures 🎣. Nothing beats sitting by a campfire on a “cold” winter’s night of 15 degrees!

I love being a teacher in Queensland for many reasons but one is the variety of schools and areas to get out and experience. I’ve been to Mornington Island, Yarrabah, Kuranda and now Tully, and have been spoiled for beautiful weather and activities to fill the time and fill my wellbeing cup outside the classroom.’

💙💭 From as early as Sarah can remember, she wanted to be a teacher! 👩‍🏫

‘My mum still has my Year 1 schoolbooks 📖 where I wrote that I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up,’ Sarah explains.

‘My teachers all played a role in my decision to choose teaching as a career. I remember the small things, even the day when my Year 6 teacher gave me my pen licence. Their kindness and patience made a big difference in my education.’ 🖋️💗

Sarah currently teaches Year 6 at Denison State School in Emerald and absolutely loves the rural lifestyle. ☀️🌾

‘I had lived in the same town my whole life (Maryborough) so when I finished my teaching degree, I took the opportunity to undertake a new adventure somewhere else in Queensland. I had some friends teaching in Mount Isa at the time and it looked like there were so many social opportunities to make new friends as well.’ 🙌

💕 Teaching and living in a rural community means that Sarah has been able to create and nurture relationships 🤝 with her students and their families.

‘I have also had the opportunity to become a mentor for beginning and preservice teachers and undertake the role of Data Manager ✍️ on our Positive Behaviour for Learning team to analyse student behaviour data.’ 👏

Another one of our wonderful teachers expressing their love for teaching and living rurally! Check out our blog to learn a little more about teaching and living in rural Queensland: https://teach.qld.gov.au/latest-articles/stories-from-mount-isa ❤️
