HOW DO ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCES MOVE TEETH ANYWAY?

Orthodontic appliances like braces or aligners create tooth movement through a process of bone remodeling.

The whole principle of moving teeth relies on the constant pressure of the tooth surface against the membrane that surrounds your tooth. Not a lot of force is needed, just enough to feel some pressure. The slow gradual movement helps reshape the bone that surrounds the tooth. In its new location the bone begins to reform around the tooth and creates a new stable position.

DO BRACES HURT?

Recently we asked some of our patients about their braces. These are sopme of the responses we received:
“I got used to them really quickly";
“They’re annoying, but fine”;
“Sorta hurt”;
“I can feel pressure”;
“They feel weird”.

So, we know it is going to… well… be a bit strange!

Just do your best to eat softer foods for a while, use the wax we give you to protect your cheeks and lips while they toughen up, and use your usual pain relievers (if you need to).

Braces do NOT set off metal detectors!

It is a misconception that the metal in braces can set off set off metal detectors at the airport.

Similarly, they don't attract lightning and won't be able to send or receive radio signals - not even from space!

So go ahead and plan that trip!!

Darren is part of our auxiliary dental practitioner team. He started with MOG fresh out of uni in 2003! 17 years and counting, that's a lot of smile making.

(a) He is a St Kilda tragic (his words not ours!)
(c) He is dad to 2 super kids under 4
(d) We have never seen his hair this long in 17 years at MOG!
