‼️Urgent plea ‼️ This is Billy an orphan dingo pup that needs our help and we need to get him to safety ASAP

Dingo puppy season in the wild has officially started and sadly 100’s and 100’s of pups across Australia will not make it in the wild due to the senseless and barbaric killing of dingoes during their whelping season.

Billy was found on a busy road in a small town near Dairy Farming region. A young gentleman found Billy and he was unable to walk, his little body was covered in ticks and he had a very large paralysis tick under his neck area. He was emaciated and had very little strength. The gentleman took him home to his mum who is a dog groomer and she cleaned him up and nursed him back to health.

The urgent plea is to help transport Billy to Highlands Dingo Rescue in Tenterfield NSW ! He needs to travel two thousand kilometres to get to us. We need to get this boy safe from the anti- dingo area he is currently in and sadly there are no appropriate dingo rescues close to Billy. Funds are needed for transport costs of $585, he will also need ongoing vet care, desexing, vaccinations, worming, flea and tick treatment and microchipping. Every dollar counts in ensuring this pup's safety and well-being.

🔸A little about our work and experiences🔸

We have 21 years hands on experience with dingoes and have many years experience rescuing the tiny wild born, orphan dingo pups that have lost their parent dingoes from the ongoing persecution of dingoes. It’s a sad time of year as dingoes in the wild are specifically targeted in whelping season with 1080 bait, trapped and shot under government legislation. By killing the parent dingoes leaves behind their defenceless pups too young to fend for themselves, all to get the kill numbers up, deliberately leaving the pups behind to die of starvation or predation.

The challenging circumstances faced by dingoes and the resulting orphan pups each year is devastating. It's heartbreaking to know that they are left vulnerable due to the actions taken against their parents in whelping season. Our dedication is rescuing these orphan pups and providing them with specialist care, working closely with pups daily with rehabilitation to prepare them for captive living. Your donation will directly impact the lives of these orphan pups allowing us to provide ongoing care and species appropriate diet. Over the years we have successfully rescued close to 50 orphan pups, placed them in dingo appropriate forever homes and wildlife sanctuaries.

Highlands Dingo Rescue is a registered charity please consider making a donation to help support the rescue and care of these precious orphan pups. Your contribution will make a meaningful difference in their lives. Thank you for your generosity and compassion.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2024-07-09/ancient-dna-study-suggests-dingoes-preserve-genetic-heritage/104065490

New ancient DNA (aDNA) study by teams at QUT, ANU, Adelaide University and others confirms the presence of ancient population structure in dingoes (first identified during my PhD research).

We hypothesised that the two dingo clades was evidence of atleast two immigrations of dingoes into Australia via the Sahul landbridge (with New Guinea). This new aDNA study also finds a close connection between southeastern dingoes and NGSD.

The aDNA study confirms little evidence that dogs have contributed to the identity of modern dingoes. This is consistent with my 2023 published research which found dingo x dog hybridisation is uncommon across Australia.

Finally, the aDNA study corroborates distinctiveness of dingoes, both ancient and modern, from domestic dogs and wolves, see this PCA figure from the supplemental data (circles drawn by me).

"We hope people making decisions about dingoes today now see these amazing animals have been around a long time, and had time to harmonise with the environment.”

Prof Mike Letnic, a dingo expert at the University of New South Wales but who was not involved in the study, said the findings were “great news” because they “put to bed the idea that dingoes are hybrids with no conservation value”.

“The results add weight to efforts to conserve dingoes because it shows that they are a distinct group and that there has been much less hybridisation than was previously thought.”

'The Australian Capital Territory has taken steps to recognise dingoes as a distinct species in need of protection after DNA research found a population of up to 400 pure dingoes in Namadgi national park.

The change will trigger the removal of the wild dog/dingoes category from the pest animal declaration and mean dingoes are protected as a native animal under the Nature Conservation Act.

New DNA results show that the populations of wild dogs in Namadgi national park are pure dingoes, showing no domesticated dog genes. The findings align with research by Dr Kylie Cairns suggesting that most dingoes in Australia are not hybrids.'

‘As we enter an era of global mass extinctions, it is important to tackle wildlife research and conservation from multiple fronts, including those made available by wildlife organisations, zoos and sanctuaries. Captive studies are particularly useful when studying free-ranging populations is difficult, and/or when controlled conditions are required. Yet, despite the significant role that they play in supporting research and conservation of species and ecosystems, they are rarely recognised in the scientific literature.'

This is a case study of the Australian Dingo Foundation (ADF), a private not-for-profit organisation that actively supports [non-invasive] research and conservation efforts relating to the dingo [Canis dingo]. Since 2010, the ADF has facilitated research across ten research disciplines that include:

· archaeology,
· behaviour,
· biology,
· cognition,
· evolutionary psychology,
· genetics,
· non-lethal management,
· reproduction and parental behaviour,
· semio-chemicals and
· vocalisations.

This has resulted in at least 25 peer-reviewed research papers conducted by both leading International and Australian scientists. As this case study demonstrates, this facility has been proven to be invaluable to the understanding and conservation of dingoes by providing practical alternatives to, and/or supplement studies of free-ranging populations.

This paper and other published scientific studies conducted in collaboration with the ADF can be found at:

Dog owners’ frustrating excuse after three iconic animals attacked 11/06/2024

Free roaming domestic dogs regularly attack, main and kill native animals and livestock. Evidence in areas where native dingoes persist has highlighted that many of these attacks are blamed on dingoes, that often results in increased lethal control under the guise of 'wild dog control'. If you own a dog, ne responsible and do not let it roam.

Classifying wild Canids poses some unique challenges for taxonomists, given that many wild Canid species, can - under rare circumstances - breed with domestic dogs and produce fertile offspring. This is true for wolves, coyotes, jackals and dingoes.

In Australia, these challenges have been weaponised to support the false narrative, purported by livestock and poison vested interests, that dingoes are just a breed of domestic dog (Canis familiaris) that has turned feral. Labelling dingoes as feral / invasive / pests / wild dogs, blatantly gaslights the Australian public into believing that dingo extermination programs are about controlling an introduced 'pest' rather than the mass extermination of an iconic, keystone native species.

Research shows that the large majority of Australians (84.6%) consider dingoes to be native to Australia and there is very low acceptance of lethal methods to 'control' them.

Dingoes are a unique, ancient wild Canid species that are genetically, behaviourally, developmentally, biochemically, morphologically and cognitively distinct from domestic dogs. Their rightful taxonomic status, according to many conservation scientists, is Canis dingo.

Shaped by nature over thousands of years, the Big Desert 'Wilkerr' dingoes are a unique lineage that have been driven to the brink of extinction by decades of relentless lethal control. They are now protected on the Victorian side of the border but incredulously, by all accounts, in response to Victoria putting protection in place, South Australia have ramped up lethal control! Extinction is forever. If you care about preserving this very special dingo population, please write to South Australia's Environment Minister, Susan Close MP.

Big Desert dingoes, or Wilkerr as they are known to the Wotjobaluk Nations People, aren't your average dingo - they're genetically distinct and with only about 40 left in the wild.

You won't find them anywhere else in the world, except within the Big Desert/Wyperfeld/Ngarkat complex, with no known Big Desert dingoes in captivity or breeding programs.

They play a vital role in the ecosystem, but it's frustrating to continually see myths and misinformation about dingoes being spread, especially in the media. They are not just a farm issue, they are a vanishing piece of Australia's unique native wildlife.
