The Portsea Surf Life Saving Club was formed in 1949 by a group of local residents to protect the lives of swimmers at the notoriously dangerous Mt. Levy Beach, commonly referred to as the Portsea Back Beach. Nepean National Park, which is managed by Parks Victoria. Since 1949 members have been responsible for saving over 4,500 lives on our beach. Since 1949 the Club has assisted over 1,500 young men and women to gain the Surf Life Saving Australia's coveted Bronze Medallion.

AUSSIES WRAP 🙌🏼
Portsea finished up about 50th ranked club in each of the Masters’ and the Open Competitions, the 5th best Victorian club at the Masters Aussies and 3rd best Victorian club in the Open Championships behind Anglesea and Mordialloc.
Thanks to Portsea Life members Darren ‘Spot’ Kerr and Michael Parkes for their help all week, and in the leadup. Michael was a referee in the boat area, signed on as a Portsea Official. Spot booked us team dinners and sourced our accommodation, Alex Mirage Apartments, high quality, in a perfect location.
Thanks also to our Team Managers, Anthony Purcell, Stu Larke, Matt Mahon and Nat Hood, plus Amber for craft handling, Charlotte for athlete liaison and organisational duties, Lisa for coffees, Sarah for food and snacks, plus our other family supporters, friends and boyfriends who made the trip so successful and fun.
Lastly the job wasn’t done until the club trailer was loaded to the hilt in torrential rain. We had extra skis for the trip home after the Cornwell’s frightening experience on the road north, when the roof racks – loaded with three skis, ripped off the car by the ‘wind rush’ of a passing truck. A huge thanks to Anthony and Lisa Purcell who brought our gear 2000km back home, and to Stephen Blewett who made the 4000km round trip towing the surf boat.
If reading this has sparked an interest in joining the team, we’d love to hear from you. Next year’s AUSSIES are back on the Gold Coast and will be held at North Kirra SLSC and Tugun SLSC from 29 March – 6 April.
Our recruiters will be out in force over the next twelve months and if we sense a sniff of interest, expect to be signed up to the team, along for the ride that is the excitement of Surf Life Saving Aussies!!

It was great again for the Portsea SLSC to be represented at the ANZAC Day service on the foreshore at Sorrento. President Matt Mahon is pictured with long serving club member Michael “Whippy” Wilson.
As well as 40+ years at Portsea, Michael has served in the Royal Australian Navy for 40 years, most of it as a reservist. Michael has been called for duty several times and served in the Gulf War, Bougainville, and Timor among others.
We acknowledge the service that Michael, other club members and all other Australians who have served our country, especially those who gave their lives. Lest we forget 🙏

CONGRATULATIONS JUNKS, BEC AND TISS 🙌🏼
This year’s Wall of Fame event was not the only opportunity to recognise the achievements of our volunteers on Easter Saturday, with three new IRB’s named in honour of members Jim “Junks” Unkles, Bec Gould and Nick Tissot.
Jim “Junks” Unkles, a member since 2006/07, has made exceptional contributions, winning the John Wishart Award twice and achieving 100% Patrol Attendance for 13 consecutive years. He’s renowned for his work in education and sports, excelling both as a podiatrist and a field hockey referee.
Bec Gould, who joined in 2004/05, served as Lifesaving Director for seven years and earned numerous accolades, including the John Wishart Award and LSV’s Award of Merit. She’s represented the club proudly at the SLSA Leadership College.
Nick Tissot, also starting in 2004/05, has been a stalwart in both competition and instruction, serving as Competition Director and representing the Club at LSV’s Aquatic Sports Council. He’s a four-time Open Male Club Champion and a dedicated supporter of his wife Sophie during her tenure as Club Captain.
Junks, Bec, and Tiss are exemplary Wall of Fame members and continue to contribute actively to the club. Congratulations on their well-deserved honors!
Flash back to our Cadets Camp back in December 💦 ➡️
Cadets participated in a combination of practical skills and engaged with theory to improve their surf awareness. Candidates requalified their SRC as well as developed board skills, improved their fitness, and developed further rescue-based skills. There was an emphasis on teamwork and scenario-based problems for all candidates to work through.
Overall, the Cadet program equipped young patrollers with valuable surf lifesaving knowledge and skills, fostering a sense of responsibility and service to the community as they actively contributed to maintaining safer beach environments. Well done everyone 👏
During the off-season, our club is open exclusively on Fridays from 4-9pm, serving up delicious food and refreshing drinks to satisfy your cravings by the shore. Keep an eye out in your emails and on socials for special events like live music and Hilly’s wheel! 💥 See you at the club!
