Q.W.i.M exhibition and font workshop

This Melbourne Design Week, MCD alum Courtney Bree (she/they) showcases her community design initiative Q.W.i.M (Q***r Women in Melbourne) with an exhibition, font workshop and panel discussion at Coburg Studios.

Courtney (she/they) is a q***r, socially responsive designer whose work aims to improve the social and political landscape.

Courtney's project, Q.W.i.M, aims to re-invigorate the history of q***r women in Melbourne and strengthen their identity through q***r archiving, co-designing fonts and protest inspired artwork. She will be presenting a participatory installation, where you'll find the opportunity to contribute to a hand-written font. Have a sit and get creative with your fellow design community members, and have a chat about the issue's impacting women in Melbourne's design community.

From 11am - 4pm Saturday and Sunday, you'll find her installation on Level One of the Exhibition Space. At 1pm on Sunday, Courtney will be participating in a panel discussion with other designers that explores their design as community building practices.

Come view her work, purchase art (profit goes towards funding further research) and become involved with the project itself if it invokes your passion.

People of all genders, sexualities and cultures are welcomed to participate!

Her exhibition runs concurrently with the Coburg Maker's Market, which features food, music and over local 50 stallholders.

Tracing Latencies: Type, Interrogated Workshop 24/03/2022

This Sunday 27 march, 1:00 - 3:30pm AEST Naarm, you are invited to a free online workshop 'Type, interrogated' which is being co-delivered by current Masters student Chiarra Paton-Dowling and alumnus Dennis Grauel, together with lecturer Fayen d'Evie and curator Anca Rujoiu. The workshop is one outcome from a project supported by Goethe Singapore and the EU Network of European Union National Institutes for Culture, which invited artists to mount a cultural critique of "smart cities."

The workshop will situate type as an active agent within the political, cultural, and anthropocentric systems it upholds. Participants are invited to join in imagining typographic modes of subversion and disobedience. The 2.5 hour workshop will be delivered online, incorporating type exercises to stimulate parallel conversations, critical and poetic thinking, performative manifestos, reflective pauses, questions and provocations.

Rarau mai Living city 20/12/2021

Rarau mai Living city, an immersive exhibition exploring the city of Auckland through data, has been announced as a finalist in Digital Design for the 2021 Victorian Premier’s Design Awards. Designed by Auckland War Memorial and OOM Creative, which is led by former RMIT University lecturer Greg More, the installation features contributions from 2019 Masters of Communication Design graduate Thy Hà and Industry Fellow Dr. Michael Dunbar.

The single room exhibit allows visitors to explore the people, environments and systems of Auckland through large-format projections on the walls and floor, an LED tower, interactive touchscreen and spatial soundscape. The exhibit it designed as an immersive experience, allowing visitors of all ages to see the city through multiple data lenses.

Thy Hà was approached by OOM Creative to design Māori pixel font families for use in the LED data display, a dynamic text-based visualisation. Drawing on expertise with diacritics—marks on letters indicating pronunciation—which Thy developed through her Masters research project designing Vietnamese typefaces, two pixel fonts were extended to crisply display Te Reo Māori.

Michael Dunbar worked with OOM Creative and the Auckland War Memorial Team to design and develop the touchscreen interactive display, which allows visitors to explore Auckland city through the three thematic map-based interactive data visualisations.

These collaborations demonstrate the rich and nuanced ways that Communication Designers contribute to the design for cultural experiences and storytelling through data.

Big congratulations to everyone involved!

Rarau mai Living city Established by the Victorian Government in 1996, the Victorian Premier’s Design Awards are an opportunity to highlight and celebrate local design capability.
