Introducing our Presidential Candidate Disha Zutshi -

Disha is a third year international student and is currently serving as the General Secretary for the year 2023, and is eager to represent you as Community’s Presidential Candidate. Community has made sure that UMSU’s structures work for, and not against students. We have consistently delivered the change needed to make UMSU more accessible, inclusive, and relevant, 2024 will be no exception ✨

As General Secretary, Disha brought much-needed transparency, efficiency, stability, and effective governance to the union during a challenging period. Laying a new foundation for getting a new CEO, getting new staff, moving to a new Union House, and facing the new post-lockdown campus that is brimming with activity and students. Now, it's time for a new, community-led UMSU to shine, with better branding, better engagement, and fostering closer stakeholder relationships. We are proud of our mission to foster diversity amongst both staff and student representatives!💚💚

Introducing our General Secretary Candidate Enzhe (Kevin) Li -

Kevin is a first year JD student, someone who moved to attend secondary education in a country which he did not speak the language, and then had to pack up his entire life in Adelaide to move across state borders for university, only to arrive in a city and a community in lockdown. He has seen the impact of student-led, student-run organisations as the beating heart of campus life. Even as the world shut down around us, it is the students, the clubs, the union, that kept a semblance of life and normality to the student experience. ✨

Now, away from lockdown, it is the union that continues the fight for student’s rights, against university management that places profits before basic student needs, and against the bureaucratic and out-of-touch elements that sought and continue to seek to shift the union away from students representing themselves and leading initiatives on campus.💚

Get ready to turn up the campus vibes! ✨We're all about levelling up your student journey and injecting some serious life into the scene. Our main goal? Crank up those event dials, giving you more action, more often.

A lineup of heart-pounding activities that'll charge you up whether you're mixin' with new mates or kickin' back with the fam, our gigs have got you covered. And hold up – expect a wave of free sips, swag, and mouthwatering munchies too! We're all about unity, throwing down cultural bashes like Holi, Eid, and Lunar New Year. We want to include more up-and-coming student talent and artists of colour in Bands and Bevs, to make it more diverse and engaging than ever. Our O'week extravaganza will set the stage, and collaborating with other clubs and societies shall encapsulate the tapestry of student life🎉

Let's pump up that campus camaraderie groove, together! There’s so much more that we want to do, so don’t hesitate to hit us up to find out more. 🫶

We aim to combat the cost-of-living crisis by pushing for the Union Mart to be open for five days a week and longer hours and providing textbooks at lower costs. We will continue to push for expanding the free brunches offered and the popular welfare trolley - delivering snacks around campus and communal areas.✨🛒

We understand that university can be lonely and isolating at times, therefore, we intend to provide more information about adjusting to Melbourne, and Australia in general in an accessible format to help you adjust and feel comfortable in your new home. This is on top of advocating for more diverse and expanded CAPS, more social meetups, and more accessible education (TTS, neurodiverse friendly fonts e.g.).

We are committed to seeing lasting change and are willing to do the work and push for your rights as students so that you can focus on enjoying your time at UniMelb!💚💚💚

"Hi, we’re Emma and Jaan and we’re running for Environment Office! We are reaching ‘global boiling point’ according to the United Nations. Everywhere you look, climate carnage is wreaking havoc – mass flooding in Beijing, smoke from wildfires in Canada clogging up New York City and hundreds dying from heat waves in Europe. All reports say Australia is heading towards another Black Summer of unprecedented bushfires - that’s why we need anti-capitalist activists in the Environment Office next year. Since the school strike for the climate movement, governments and fossil fuel corporations have adopted targets to achieve net zero by 2050 - but the climate crisis is happening now, not in thirty years time! We need urgent action right now. We want to build protest campaigns to push back against our own government’s climate delayism and demand radical, immediate climate action. The federal Labor government has billions of dollars for nuclear powered submarines, tax cuts for billionaires and subsidies for fossil fuel companies. Instead we need to demand the government to rapidly transition to renewables and stop digging up coal, oil and gas. We need to rebuild the fighting climate movement that Greta Thunberg kick started. It is only through protesting that we can win - just look at any mass movement in history, from the civil rights movement to Black Lives Matter. Through the Environment Office, we will have more resources to build protests on our own campus against the university administration who collaborate with fossil fuel and weapons companies. This year we have organised national days of action against Labor's climate inaction and the uni’s profiteering from war and militarism. We have also supported social justice campaigns-against racism and fascism in Melbourne."

"Hi, we’re Bella and Raph and we’re running for the Education (Public Affairs) Office to fight for a university run for students and staff - not for profit. We’re student activists who have spent the last few years at Unimelb campaigning against course cuts and fee hikes. We’re outraged by the transformation of universities in Australia into degree factories, with class sizes creeping up year upon year whilst fees continue to rise. We think everyone has a right to education, not just those who can afford ever-increasing fees. This year we helped start the Students Support Staff Strikes campaign, to show solidarity with staff members striking and organising for better teaching conditions. Staff deserve real wage increases, permanent employment and manageable workloads. We have argued that students and staff have a united interest in fighting for a university with properly paid teachers who can give students the quality education they deserve Ultimately, we understand that a university which oversees fee hikes in a cost-of-living crisis, and stonewalls striking workers, all while cutting business deals with climate criminals like the mining company Rio Tinto, is no friend of students. We also know that the Labor government doesn’t have our best interests at heart. The money they’re spending on nuclear submarines and tax breaks for property investors could fully fund affordable housing, free education and liveable welfare for all students. Next year we will be staunch fighters for students against UniMelb’s corporate management and the Labor government."

We believe that it is important for all q***r people, particularly those of diverse backgrounds, to have a voice in our student union!

As international students and q***r people of colour, having experienced the feeling of ‘not fitting in’, and the ‘feeling of not being wanted’ in our home cultures, we want to create a space where all q***r people feel welcomed, supported, and represented. 🫶

Working towards this goal, we want to see bigger, better, and more events, where everyone in the community will feel safe to attend, and explore and express their identity. We also want to make UMSU’s resources more accessible to q***r people of colour, including mental health support, legal advice, and financial assistance. ✨

We have a proven track record as passionate advocates for q***r rights and q***r people, of working with q***r people from all backgrounds, and of being compassionate and welcoming to those who wish to explore and shape their own path and identity within our community. This what we fight for, this is where our heart lies, and this is why we are your community candidates for UMSU q***r 🌈

We share a strong commitment to enhancing the inclusivity and accessibility of our university for all individuals, with a specific focus on empowering students with disabilities. Our vision is to cultivate an environment where every student can flourish and actively participate in university life. 💫

As your Office Bearers, we will work tirelessly to ensure that our campus becomes a model of accessibility. This includes advocating for the mandatory implementation of accessible features during lectures and tutorials and formulating comprehensive guidelines for events that will be inclusive. We strive for a university that creates its policies around the needs of its students with disabilities and most importantly, we want them to be held to account for the success or failure of these policies!

We will continue to build on the work we have already done to foster a close-knit community of support and shared resources, as well as use education as a means to raise awareness and dispel the various misconceptions surrounding disabilities. Our goal is to create a space where all students across the spectrum of disability feel heard, valued, and supported.💚

We are super excited to bring more educational, career and creative opportunities to the campus and provide a more meaningful platform to all our artist students out there! ✨

Among many events, a few that we will be bringing on campus are ‘Unimelb Fringe Festival 2024’ - where students can showcase their talents in the fields of theatre, visual arts, music, dance, film, and design. The ‘Arts and Crafts Market 2.0’ - where students can market their talents while also creating a profit on their creative exhibits. Lastly, the ‘Creative Meet and Greet’ - where students can meet noted artists and learn about their careers and skill development 💫💚
