The Melbourne Yiddish Seder Project: the songs of Boruch Kaluszyner The Melbourne Yiddish Seder Project showcases the legacy of Boruch Kaluszyner, including recordings of his original songs and a songbook.

The 19th of April marks one of the most important events on the SKIF calendar. On this day in 1943, Jewish partisans launched a retaliatory attack against the liquidation of the ghetto, beginning the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The partisans were able to delay Nazi deportations for almost a month. The ZOB (Jewish Combat Organisation), composed of several Bundistn and SKIFistn along with other members of the community, was central to the uprising. Today we remember not only the physical resistance of Jews in the Holocaust, but also their cultural resistance. Emanuel Ringelblum founded and worked with others on the ‘Oyneg Shabbes’ archive, some smuggled essential supplies over the ghetto walls, others continued taking part in education, theatre, and cultural or religious activities, refusing to be dehumanised by the Nazis.

We commemorate this day annually, recognising the strength and resilience exhibited by those who fought against tyranny and injustice with unwavering bravery and hope. We honour the memory of all those who suffered at the hands of the Nazi regime, and ensure that their stories of courage and defiance in the face of oppression are passed on, striving to build a future where such atrocities can never happen again.

Tonight, we will be hosting our annual Ghetto Akademie, where SKIFistn and members of the SKIF and Bund community come together to recall the events of the uprising and Khurbn through poetry and song. You can book for livestream access for the event via the link in our bio.

We will not be able to take additional attendees on the evening.

The Bund and New Israel Fund co-present this online event, to hear from a variety of Israeli peace activists about the crisis in Israel and Gaza and what the immediate and longer term future looks like in the region.

Please note - the Bono Wiener Lecture with Dr Barry Jones (planned for this day) has again been postponed. We will be reflecting on Khaver Bono at the beginning of this event.
