Kilsyth Centenary Pool to be permanently closed

Dear friends and members of Kilsyth,

Last night, Yarra Ranges Council made the tough but necessary decision to close Kilsyth Centenary Pool permanently.

Belgravia Leisure has managed the Yarra Ranges facilities for many years and we are deeply saddened to see the pool close. We support Councils decision, as the pool has reached the end of its serviceable life - the unique dome is extraordinary but it is no longer safe to occupy.

For all Aquatic Members and Swim School Students, you will remain on suspension at no cost. We will be in contact in the coming days and weeks to help you find a new home for your aquatic activity and to refund any credit you are owed on your membership, multi visit pass or term membership. Please be patient as we work through that with you all.

Our beloved staff have been redeployed to Monbulk Aquatic Centre, Yarra Centre, Jack Hort Pool and Knox Leisureworks since March, and on behalf of them and the wider Belgravia Leisure team we are truly grateful for your patronage, support and shared grief at the closure of the pool.

We wanted to let you know that tomorrow, Tuesday 24 October, Councillors will be considering a recommendation for the permanent closure of Kilsyth Centenary Pool at the Council Meeting.
Unfortunately, since its temporary closure in March 2023, following identification of significant defects to the structure of the dome and supporting fixtures, further significant defects to pool plant and the pool shell have been identified.

Should the Councillors decide to close Kilsyth Centenary Pool it is proposed the land will be returned to open space for community use while a master plan for Kiloran Park is finalised. We understand the proposal to permanently close the pool will impact members and users of Kilsyth Centenary Pool and that for many this will be the loss of a much-loved local facility with many happy memories. Members will be supported by Belgravia Leisure and Council to find alternative programs to stay active at nearby facilities.

Swimming is more fun and safer when enjoyed together.

In addition to physical barriers for children to access swimming pools, consider these tips to reinforce the importance of swimming together.

Lead by example – remind children that swimming is a “together” activity, consistently modelling safe water habits and activities for them to learn from.

Buddy system –encourage swimming with a buddy at all times, whether this includes a parent or another responsible adult.

Swimming alone can be associated with several safety risks such as the absence of immediate help or attention during unexpected emergencies or in vulnerable situations.

Together, we can prioritise water safety and protect our loved ones, particularly children and weak or non-swimmers. Remember to encourage active adult supervision, teach water safety, and reinforce a buddy system at all times when in and around water.

KILSYTH CENTENARY POOL TO REMAIN CLOSED

Belgravia Leisure can share the news that the beloved Kilsyth Centenary Pool will be remaining closed for an extended period.

In a statement issued earlier today, Yarra Ranges Council announced:

"Yarra Ranges Council is disappointed to announce that Kilsyth Centenary Pool will remain closed pending the completion of a new Aquatic Strategy for the municipality which is currently being developed and due for completion later this year."

Both Yarra Ranges Council and Belgravia Leisure are committed to the members, swim school students, user groups and casual users of Kilsyth Centenary Pool and we will be in contact next week with the options available to continue with your aquatic activity.

Our staff will also be redeployed so you'll see plenty of familiar faces at our other facilities.

We know this isn't the news you were hoping to hear, but we are committed to keeping you up to date and connected to us during the prolonged closure.

Kilsyth Centenary Pool remains closed due to ongoing structural assessment. This will be completed shortly and we hope to provide a further update by late next week.

Thanks for your patience, endless support and notes of love for the Dome over the last week as we gathered more insight at Kilsyth Centenary Pool.
We can share that we'll have a broader communication going out early next week to share the next steps, and we continue to thank you for the support. We have temporarily redeployed our team to other sites and have a skeleton crew still at Kilsyth keeping our essential operations in order - but we are remaining closed for now.

The Lilydale, Healesville and Belgrave Outddoor Pools are having lots of activity over this weekend to close out the outdoor pool season - including the doggy day fun from 5pm Monday. Of course, please visit our other facilities at Jack Hort Healesville Indoor Pool, Yarra Recreation Centre and Monbulk Aquatic Centre, and of course our sister site at Knox Leisureworks.

Please keep up whatever activity you can in the meantime and thanks again for your amazing support.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Kilsyth Centenary Pool Closure

Unfortunately Kilsyth Centenary Pool will be closed as of 4pm March 1 until further notice.

As part of routine maintenance and following recent vandalism, some structural issues have been identified relating to the inflated dome that encloses the pool which requires further detailed investigation. Due to this, it is unfit for public occupancy.

Because of the unique construction of the dome, investigations will be complex and will require that the dome is deflated, hence the need to close the pool.

All current memberships and swim school students will be suspended free of charge while we pause operation at the facility.

We know you’ll have lots of questions and concerns and we are here to help, so please call, email or keep an eye on our page or website linked below.

Further information regarding the duration of the closure and the opportunity to use other facilities will be shared in the coming days and weeks.
