Our Story
As part of the Department of Surgery, our focus has been on learning in clinical ultrasound and research in cardiac surgery and anesthesia. The courses have been delivered as University Certificate, Diploma and Master award courses, and internationally as professional development courses and workshops, including integrating simulation into learning.
The UEG was founded in 2004 by directors Alistair and Colin Royse. The first course was the Postgraduate Diploma of Perioperative and Critical Care Echocardiography (PGDipEcho). As the years went by the course was improved to the current portfolio and include Certificate, Diploma and Master of Clinical Ultrasound. During this time iHeartScan and Nerve Block workshops were developed, then iHeartScan Advanced and more recently the Focused Cardiac Ultrasound simulator TTE and TOE Courses, which integrate e-learning with simulators to reinforce practical components.
In Australia, there are roughly 6500 anaesthetists and intensive care physicians. Over 2500 students have graduated from our award courses, and over 3000 have completed one of our workshops or getting started packages. To put this in perspective, we believe we have trained approximately 40% of the entire pool of anaesthetists and intensive care physicians in Australia.
