Our Story

Good News Power Basketball club’s origins date back to 2007, when a small group of parents of children attending Good News Lutheran College (GNLC) located in Tarneit on Melbourne’s outer west, identified a need for a structured sports activity outside the school-based programs.

Led by Leanne Sammut, who was the club president and main driver since the team’s inception, the parents recruited primary school aged boys and girls from the school to form the Good News Power basketball club.

Initially, four teams, Under 8's, Under 10 girls, Under 10 boys and Under 14 boys were entered in the junior competition conducted at the Werribee Basketball Association.

In those early days, having enough regular players to support all teams each week was a major difficulty, but with persistence and the work of the dedicated parents, the club has grown to now comprise of more than 20 teams ranging from ‘Under 8s’ to ‘Under 18s’.

The aim of the club is to develop the children’s basketball skills, and through basketball, develop life skills. While the children primarily came from the Good News Lutheran School, children from many other local schools are now also part of the club.

The Good News Power basketball club provides a pathway for the children to continue their basketball development. The club in 2009 had one child go on to play representative basketball, with six children in 2010. We are proud to say five of these six children started with us as beginners.

We are continually looking for new players and coaches to join our growing club, both from Good News College and from the wider community! Further information can be obtained by contacting us at [email protected].
